http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii275/prohemi500/000_0005.jpg
Just found this pic in another thread and ive started my strip down,
What sort of paint is used to get a engine looking this good?
Is there special prep work needed?
And will it flake off after 5 mins use???

How about BBQ Black Krylon? Will that work? This is a newb question.....
What I want to know is how about the 'correct' paint for the frame?
I just bought an 86 200x this is in great shape but might earn a teardown in the future....

Just used gloss high temp paint on this one held up great didn't chip or anyting and still looked good when it was sold. just make sure you clean the motor good before you paint it.

if i'm not mistaken..the engine in that pick is NOS. I think that is what he said....

Looks too shiney for NOS. Might be glossy black, not high heat - he doesn't plan on riding it anyhow.

It's not powder coated? How do you spray paint the engine without clogging up or ruining the parts?
do you have to take everything apart? or can you spray it in the trike?

Not a paint and body guy myself.... but going to various car and bike shows the motors often are painted to match the vehicles body color. I've seen engines painted in super high-gloss and even metal-flake colors, and many were driven regularly. I know in the past epoxy paints have worked best for me for longevity and wear resistance........ never tried epoxy on an engine though, but as with all painting my guess is the prep work is the most important thing to get proper adhesion....... along with correct heat resistant primer and paint combos. :beer

I use a high heat paint, i believe 1500 degree and it is available in all kinds of colors. I use low gloss black, but they have it in flat and gloss and high gloss.
I cant remember the brand but you can get it at auto parts stores (has a picture of a V8 with a blower on the can)

Thats probably it. It holds up really well on the motor, on my 250R headpipe it gets sandblasted off, but what doesn't.

thats what we used on the 350x i pictured but 500 degree i only use 1500 if i am going to paint a pipe. stuff works great.

on painting the motor i took mine out cuz i had to rebuild it and i taped off the cyclinder. and put like 2 coats on and let it bake in the sun. u could tape off the frame but u will have to many coat on the motor and will run hotter being air cooled.if your motor looks fine i woulndt bother painting it.

You can use PC or there are a ton of paint colors that can take the heat also. Like the other person said people paint motors all the time to match the car.

How well was it preped. It sounds like that is pry the problem or cheap paint.

guys ,
to get a succesfull paint job its all in the prep , if you are painting aluminum it needs to be etch primed first to get a solid bond on the metal then painted a good quality catalaized paint will hold up just fine . you use a $4 can of spray paint you will get about 4 min of good looks after you ride it I beleive the factory used epoxy paint . on our restorations we use powder coat and yes you need to take the engine completeley apart to powder coat it , but its the only way to get the factory new look this way you will see the new gaskets etc again it all depends on your end result attached is a pic of an 87 200X we just did for reference we use a satin sheen on our engines Mike

i prep every thang right i guess i bead blasted, then used a scratch bright pad. one coat let it bake in the sun tell dry, put anther caot. i called honda dealer ship they sed it caost 80 dallors a pint for the motor paint. but u cant just buy it, u have to let them paint it and it 100 bucks an hour and it take 3 hours for themto dry it and, and it takes a heat treatment so i used dupicolor paint it around 6 or 7 bucks and im guessing around 2 years it shouldhold up
how do you go about painting the engine? just mask off the frame and spray away?
Nahh it has to come out first,

I'm with Mike, auto type paint with a hardner or powder coating is the only finish thats gonna stand up (if you ride of course). Some guys restore ATC's and don't ride them and they can get away with a spray bomb. And unfortunately you do have to disassemble the whole motor as it's impossible to bead blast or use other paint removal processes without getting it in the motor.
Tearing into your motor is a good thing, gives you a chance to freshen it up and check things out before they fail.
I didn't know anything about "etch priming" though, I'll definitely look into that next time.
