there is a knob on the left hand side of the engine(gearbox) with high, low, and reverse...pull the knob up and slide it back to go into reverse....

Do it from neutral!! Click the shifter down when neutral light and reverse light are on!! Click up to get out. Move knob back to desired range.

Stop the trike. Put it neutral or first gear. Make sure the trike is completely stopped. Pull up on the range select knob, up move forward to put in high range or towards the rear of the trike to put it in reverse. Make sure you feel and hear it "click" into each range. If the range selector wont go into reverse, you might have to slightly rock the bike back and forth while trying to put it in range. Also if you are having troubles getting it in reverse, put the transmission in first gear and try shifting again. Do not give it any gas, and you have to be completely stopped while shifting, weather in neutral or first gear. Also don't rely on the dash light to tell you when its in reverse. The reverse light will come on before the bike is truly and fully in revese. If you dont hear or feel it click into reverse, you might need to rock the bike to get it in reverse, even if the reverse light is on.
The '84 Atc200es has only one reverse gear and neutral.

 wow... makes me appreciate how simple engaging reverse on the 250sx is.

The '84 Atc200es has only one reverse gear and neutral.

Actually it has 5 speeds in reverse. It gets reverse by running the reduction gears in the range box (read Sub transmission) off a idler gear to reverse the rotation. Works kinda like the directional inverter on a hydrostatic tractor. Just keep stepping down on the shifter will keep shifting the transmission up a gear. That was one of the few things I really liked about the 200es instead of the 250es was the ability to have a low speed reverse in addition to higher gears in reverse. You ever try backing out of a mud hole with the 7 something to 1 reverse gear in a 250 you'd understand the upside immediately.

When you're up to the headpipe in water on the 250 Br you immediately realise the upside of not having to roll your sleeves up to find the H/L/R lever!
Having seen someone show me how fast his moto4 could go in top reverse and screwing the diff (I don't know, it was fine 'till he did that!) I'm quite happy with the 7 something : 1 reverse.
There's probably equal advantages to both.
