hey guys,

I am trying to rebuild 10 pull starters off a 185/200 atc's. But I am trying to figure out how the hell you are suppose to get the spring coil (long coil that winds into to case) into the case. I had the spring coil out and now trying to put it back in and hell I have been working on it for about a half an hour and still no luck. Is there a trick. The book just says wind it up and they make it sound simple but its giving me hell. any help or suggestions would be great

Thanks
Tyler

Well, it not to bad I normally start with the out side coil and work the spring in coil by coil with my thumbs while spinning the housing. Its hard to explain in text, someday I should take some pics.

Hey Tyler,

I feel your pain, my first one took 2 1/2 hours to do. After reading this forum, a gentleman suggested the following technique:

You must install the spring from the outside in. Any other method I tried failed miserably, with some choice words being said along the way. First, place the spring's hook in the proper position of the recoil assembly. (make sure you got it right, otherwise you'll have to do it again!

Using both hands, (or maybe 3-4 if you have some help available) carefully wrap the spring into its retainer from the outside - in. The first two wraps are very difficult to keep in place, it will want to "jump" out of position. I had the rest of the coil spring dangle underneath the assembly cover, seemed to keep it from wanting to pop out so much. After the first two wraps, it becomes significantly easier. Don't relax yet! Always have one hand holding the spring in place, and just slide them into position as you rotate the spring into place. Keep an eye on the spring, you will see it start to shift upwards before it jumps loose.

I installed an 1/8" vinyl covered cable for my pull cable with some cable clamps. I hope I don't have to rebuild one of these for a long time!

Good luck, I hope this makes sense

Man, I know how hard winding that coil is. What I used to do was to use vice grips to keep the coils together after winding each succesive coil, and then masking tape around them right before you stuck it into the case. Then the masking tape can be burned off or cut.

That is the method I use as well. I showed a few members at TF06 how I did it and they couldn't believe the spring could be put in under 45 seconds. It's really easy once you understand the trick.

I'll post it here just so it's in more than one place.

EXCELLENT METHOD! !

Putting the spring back is actually very easy once you know the trick to doing it. The First time it may take 5-10 minutes to get the spring in. After doing 10-15 of them you will be doing it in under a minute.

How I do it:
#1 Take and hook the end of the spring in housing and hold it there with your left hand.
#2 Take your right hand and slowly work the spring in about 1/2 to 2/3 the way around and hold it there with your right hand.
#3 Slide your left hand around about 4" ( holding the spring in the housing ).
#4 Take your right hand work about 4" more of the spring in the housing. And hold it there.
#5 Repeat steps #3 & #4 until the spring is in the housing.

#6 Install the rest of the parts and your done.

I have taught this trick to a lot of people. It works so good most of them got it on the first try.

Wow, that worked great. I have had so many problems with the recoil on my 84' 200s and like everytime I take it apart the coil pops out. In the past we have rolled it up as tight as we could in our hands and then tried to pop it in without it springing out... took four hands to do this and alot of attempts. Can't believe all those times I could of just started it in the housing and worked my way in, worked first try. Now just gotta see if my bored out beast will start up tomorrow and fixed my flat tire.

Winding it with your hands is the easiest way to do it IMHO. I dont even understand those directions, let alone attempt it. Instead of trying to drop the spring in with your hands, clamp it with vise grips or grab with needle nose pliers. Then sit it down inside. Once its inside you can let it go all you want, it wont pop out ;)

just did the recoil on the ytm200 yesterday.. threw on my fox riding gloves ( cant find my work gloves) and wound it tight in my hands, takes a few min to get it tight enough to fit but it does work and its not to hard to do, took a plyered and locked onto the spring to keep it from moving. put it in the housing than laide my free hand over the spring and let go with the plyers.. worked like a charm

I have tried winding it up in my hand and dropping it in there and I could never do it without help. Those directions mean that you take the outside hook on the coil and put it in the recoil housing on the spot it catches on. Then just feed the coil in and work your way in until it is all in there. Hold it down with your fingers as you go, so it doesn't pop out. You kind of spin the coil around the recoil housing as you go.
