Havent really posted much at all.....just been lurking around lol
Whats the best way to beef up a gear? if you didnt see my 1st thread, i have a yamaha 400 maxim motorcycle with a 3 wheeler axle on the back...and i broke the 1st gear gettin a little to rough on it..i just got a new gear set (25$$!!!!) and i was wondering a good way to make the gear alot stronger so i dont break it again...
Any help is much appriciated!
Freeze them in liquid nitrogen.

Well for a true gearhead there are options, such as cryogenic ally treating them or other treatments. But, this is all big $$ for big motors and drag guys, maybe you just had some bad luck and beat it a lil much....
Most gear sets are very strong, some models are weak but mosty the gears themselves are very tough until nitrous and big mods come into play.

thanks for the reply, its just that the first gear is more of a "wheel" and even looks weak, plus it has the weight of 2 big tires on it when its only made for 1.there is no cheaper solution to make them stronger? i was thinking about welding on some extra steel but it might get in the way of the shifting mechanism.if i do put it back in and it breaks it would suck because i dont even know if i can put it back together as it is! lol

put a little slip in the clutch to take the impact off the rear wheels. No way to make the existing gear a lot more stonger, would have to make a new one heavier, and they dont leave much spare room inside transmissions.

Welding on gears isnt to great of an idea. One thing you could do that may help is to relieve any sharp 90 degree edges just a bit. These edges are where any fractures will stem from. A well engineered part rarely has any 90 degree edges. Although, if the gear is over loaded, it still wont hold up.
