for some reason, the idle has gone way up on my ATC 185
as soon as i Pull to start it, it revs up to Very High RPM's by itself.
as if its on full throttle. I have removed and checked the Throttle Needle where it goes into the carb, and i have adjusted the idle screw on the carb.. Nothing !!
how do i determine if its a problem with the Throttle Cable itself?
any ideas to diagnose and fix this problem??

You may have an airleak somewhere. spray some wd-40 around the intake and carb while its running.. if it revs.. you've found your problem.
It can also be your cable is getting hung up somewhere. is it routed properly? Or old and wore out. It dont take much for dirt and grime to get down in there and make it sticky. maybe replace that. (it's cheap!) have you throroughly cleaned the carb?
You can also mess with the air screw. Its been a while since I messsed with mine but I think I used to turn it in till it about dies... turn it out till it idles a bit fast... then set it right in the middle of those adjustments.
I was having this same problem with my ride recently. take the cover off the throttle housing and make sure its all right inside there.. if there's water in there and the bike has been sitting outside in the winter it will freeze up.
Oops.. just noticed your in san antionio... cant be that cold down there... lol

im scared to try the Wd 40 because as soon as i start it i have to shut it off quickly because of how high the RPM's are. its full throttle, in neutral.
not sure how long i would trust that on a 25 year old Engine.
Carb is cleaned, Throttle cable is very old and wore out. even has some electrical tape where it inserts into the Thumb control box on the handlebars.
but, when i pulled the Cable/Needle out of the carb, and operate the thumb pedal, it seems to go in and out like its supposed to.

Hmm,, As long as theres oil in it I wouldn't worry about it reeving. (its a honda lol) those rubber intake boots get dry rotted and tend to crack.. causing an air leak.
It's only a couple bucks.. replace the throtle cable first and give it a shot if you want.. new parts on your ride wont hurt.
maybe someone else will chime in here and offer up some other advice...
Sounds to me like your cable is getting hung up tho.. I'd replace it and report back.
even has some electrical tape where it inserts into the Thumb control box on the handlebars.
I'd start there... Its probably gummed up causeing it to stick.

www.denniskirk.com carrys alot of the atc throttle cables for like 15 bux
if it revs so high u cant do the wd-40 trick atleast inspect the intake and all for any leaks, does the throttle lever come back on its own after u push it in? im assuming u have already taken the top off the throttle box to make sure it was all functioning right but it may just need a little lube if the lever isnt coming back on its own..if u listen with the engine off you should be able to hear the slide drop to the bottom in the carburetor after u hit the throttle, also if u had the slide out of the carb before this started happening make sure u put it back in there right, i had a buddy of mine do this once even tho the slide is only supposed to go in one way (or atleast on trimotos) he got it in there backwards somehow.. you said you took the slide out of the carb and operated the thumb lever and it worked fine tho so im not so sure it has anything to do with the cable/throttle box, i would have to say the slide is getting stuck in the carb from dirt or being in backwards, or you have a major air leak - let us know

well i didnt take the Slide needle out of the carb, untill the problem was already existing. but the cable is not in the best of shape, and just because if SEEMS to be working correctly... it might not.
While waiting for the new cable, i think ill remove one from another atc i have and put it on to see if that fixes it.
i sure wish i had a garage to be working now, at 2:00am.
i have to wait to work outside, w/ daylight.

I had the same thing happen and it was the slide in backwards.
