i was trying to adjust my chain the other day on my 83 250r and i noticed that most of the adjustment teeth on the bearing carrier are broken off. and of course when i try to adjust the chain i notice that they are pretty brittle. where can i get another carrier? also is there a tool that you use to adjust the slack because it seems that wacking the teeth with a screwdriver it pretty damaging to the carrier. if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

They make a spanner wrench for adjusting it.
The thing is, people need to take them apart and grease them once in awhile depending on riding conditions. They get seized up and thats when guys bust out the screwdriver and hammer.
IDK if there is an aftermarket carrier for the 83R or you'll have to get a used one thats good - expect to pay 50 to 100$....

thanks for the input. i figured there was a wrench but i'v never seen one. any idea whare to get the wrench? i found a couple of them on ebay but i was hoping maybe someone on this site may have an old one that they would consider getting rid of. i know a lot of guys change out their swing arms for longer ones, was hoping maybe one of them have one still inside the old swing arm.

thanks for the input. those carriers look really nice, and since they are already assembled with the bearings it seems like a good investment--only downfall is the price...$299 but finding an old one in good condition may end up costing me just as much, if i can find one. i didnt see the spanner wrenches, do you know who sells them???

denniskirk.com sells a spanner wrench pretty cheap, a few different ones actually... i would imagine any atv spanner wrench would work.. such as one for a shock or something similar... so check out rockymountainatv.com and places like that
EDIT:
For mine, i just greased the inside of the carrier lasttime i put bearings in it, and i have an odd bolt that is shaped like a Z only with 90' angles... I'll post a picture in a minute or two.. it works perfectly... a similar bolt would work, or a oil pump pushrod out of a automobile engine... Nice and smooth, doesn't do damage... and when you can get your carrier to rotate freely, theirs no fear of busting off the teeth....

Yeah i double posted...
The homemade tool works perfectly.... In the picture, it is kind of hanging in the carrier, but when pushed in, it fits nice and snug...
Sorry if your 250r carrier isn't made like this... I believe it is, but this should be similar...

I usually weld the adjuster side of the carrier up, then re-cut the knotche's Instead of buying a new carrier. Unless It's cracked through to where the outer bearing race Is.

the one in that pic looks more like the way my 400ex was made. the one on the 83 250r has much smaller teeth. they look just like the adjustment teeth on top of a shock. small and brittle. a spanner will definately be a must. but since i only have about 3 teeth left on the entire carrier, i'll probably have to replace it. i was hoping to find a used one instead of putting out $300. so if anyone has one in decent shape please let me know.

well guys i managed to find an entire swingarm in surprisingly nice shape for $50. it was a relief. it still has all the teeth on the carrier. i'll be completing the transaction today. thanks for all the info you guys gave me.
