Hi, everyone.
Ever since i got my 185 it made a noise in the top of the engine, i was told it could have something to do with the exhaust valve, thats were the noise is coming from at least. So i got a manual, and adjusted the valve, still no go, So just about a week ago i took off the carb, cleaned it, adjusted the pilot screw, put a bigger jet in (stock 98, now a 100), the only reason i jetted it was becuase i put a jardine exhaust on it and it said jetting is recommended. After all this the noise is even louder!! Does anybody know what makes the noise, its almost a loud ticking or a chattering. If you do how hard is it to fix and how much would it cost?

Thanks Alot, hope to hear from someone soon!!

Look in your new manual for timing chain adjustment. Do the adjustment and let us know.

I would guess that it is slack in the timing chain, worn rocker arm or a weak valve spring.

A cam chain is the same thing as a timing chain, right? If it is, I looked in my manual and I already adjusted my cam chain. It didn't help the noise. Any other suggestions?

yep, cam chain should be the same as a timing chain. when my X was running, it was also noisy. it sounded like the valves/rocker arms ticking and the timing chain. from what i hear, all the older hondas are noisy. so i wouldn't worry about it too much unless it sounds like its doing damage.

There are a chitload of stock original timing chains out there still! I just go ahead and change them and the guides and that quiets things down......

Other top end noise can come from worn rocker arms and cam journals.....Usually from an oil starved head.
