I bought 2 250 motors yesturday. Ones out of a 86sx motor and the other is an 85es motor. The SX motor, which is the one I want to use, is missing the gear shift shaft. Is it hard to put back in?

No, but on the opposite side (clutch cover) it has to spline into another shaft that runs the clutch while your shifting. It also has a thrust washer in there that can fall out and into the motor. Look at a diagram and you will see what I mean.
Your gonna have to take off both side covers and you'll need 3 gaskets.

I just don't understand why someone would take that out. It makes no sense.

Might have broken, or maybe the engine is boned and they used it for spare parts.

Well forget using that motor. Seems like the guy I bought it from happened to not tell me its been ripped apart. "Good mechanical shape" is what he told me. I took it apart, all the bolts were loose, no gaskets, parts falling out of it, and the second gear from the kickstarter was just hanging there. Unbelivable! Well, i'm eithier going to see how long the one in it last or buy just a slap in from ebay. I guess its still cool to have parts.
