looking for ignition upgrades for my 84 300R, and other things i should check out/clean up in the electrical system to make the ignition system more powerful.
Any ideas/links to products would be great.

try a pvl... nice set ups they are. a bit expensive but imo well worth it.

+1 on PVL as long as you're willing to sacrifice your headlight.

correct me if im wrong but isnt PVL only for the liquid cooled models?

Could be. He'll have to do some research.

I can hop it up and re-work the wiring and leave the headlight intact and use the stock parts:

If you want it really hopped up for high compression or all out racing, I can have the stator modified.

The PVL is a MAJOR waste of money. Why replace all the parts when the stock system has plenty of grunt hiding inside?
The PVLs also have a problem with trading off starting for high speed power. This drives the Kart guys up a wall.

Notice that when you look at aftermarket kits, they probably wont talk about increasing power, just talk about timing changes. Timing changes can be made for about $0 if you know how.

Air/water cooled makes no difference, ignition is about compression and air-fuel ratio, not cooling system. A hot ignition will (if the engine is tuned properly) run cooler.

I would think that they make a setup for a early elsinore 78-80 that would work for the air R's. They are basically the same engines component wise. Counterbalancer wouldn't affect this. Or just try and find a complete cr setup. Those old cr's were fast. In fact, why not use a cr cylinder as well. The 79's were supposidly the fastest of the airs.

team geek your so fullof it
i woudl suggest a pvl also if your willign to do away with headlight and if not just make shure allyour connections are cleana nd possibly have the stator rewound if you want the lights brighterand see what bulbs willcross referance for higher wattage.

first off the question was....ignition upgrades!!! a pvl is an ignition upgrade.

second, i have seen three bikes that run a pvl system and not a single one has a problem starting, usually first or second kick and the bikes come to life, so where you get that info from i have no clue. maybe if your not timed right yeah, but a pvl is so easy to work with an idiot would be the only one to screw that up.

you could waste your time re winding a stock stators coils, but your still not going to get as hot of a spark from that as you would a pvl. sorry chief!!!!

and ignition isnt based solely on compression and air/fuel mixture either... it has alot to do with the components your running in the "ignition system!" i.e flywheel, stator, cdi, coil, and oh yeah timing...advance or retard! none of them parts has anything to do with compression or fuel/air mixture.:welcome:

Yes it does and you know why? cause they do not make a PVL ignition for the aircooled models!
