How in the world do you conceal that ruger without a long trench! LOL
I carry nothing but one of my 12 glocks( 9mm, .40cal, .45, .357 sig, 10mm), unless summer time in shorts than I carry my colt pony (.380).
Whatever happened to just carrying your 2 bare fists??????
Guns are the easy way out.For a second.

I've really been thinking about getting my conceal permit, I feel like its a necessity anymore in this day and age, and I'm finally 21 where I can actually get it. Almost all of my friends and relatives carry Kel-Teks (either the .32 or the .380). They are of course smallest and lightest in class, but from what I've seen also the most un-accurate and ill built. The barrel on the one flops around almost a 1/4 of an inch when you pull the ejector back manually which doesn't comfort me. Another had permanent failure with the ejector mechanism, and this is just within about a dozen or so that I know of personally, Its gotta be a common thing. Not very comforting to me :(
So those of you guys that pack and carry daily, I'll be happy to take some advice on what you would recommend for me. I don't think I want anything smaller then a .32. Weight and size are a pretty big deal. I probably wouldn't be opposed to a revolver. Not sure how much to spend, I guess 3-$400 between the piece and a conceal type holster? Not able to purchase right now but its definitely on my mind a lot and I do have plans to go ahead and get my permit in the near future.

Not an easy way out, and 2 fists are only going to do so much (especially when you may have several attackers, carrying who knows what). Dont know what hillbilly came up with this saying, but its how I feel... "I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6"
Planning on getting my permit soon, dont know why I havent yet (have already had a course too). Happy to hear that a lot of you guys carry. Doesnt seem like many people see the significance until its too late.
Well as im over in the UK all handguns are now banned but we have never been able to carry them over here anyway,
I did shoot at a range with pistols a lot when i was young as my dads best mate owns the local firing range and my dad used to have a few pistols but its even banned at ranges now aswell.
I have a shotgun license here
YES you have to go threw loads of ball ache just to get one of those.
Trust me you guys dont know how good you have it over there in the USA.
Trikes, Guns and V8s everywhere. I so want to move over there.

I already carry to the extent of the law without having the conceal permit, but that only works to an extent and in certain places :)

Well I teach tactical gun and handgun permit classes sometime, and here is a few things you need to look for.
1. Weight of the gun, big heavy gun isnt fun to tote around all day.
2. Size, having a huge gun would be bulky to conceal and heavy too
3. Accurate and comfortable to shoot
4. Dependable and easy to shoot in quick situations
5. color, (yeah I know sounds funny), but those pretty nickel guns are easily seen.
6. Cost.....too cheap of a gun is too cheap of a gun, similar to electrical stuff
Ok here is some of the reasons for your answers above:
You want a good solid gun that isnt stupid heavy while you carry all day. You want to be able to conceal your gun, as that will save or kill you. If someone breaks in or robs a place when you are there, if they see a gun on you, you are good as dead. If they dont, then they will just follow thru on the robbery and you can take action if necessary.
You want something that fits you, just like a set of shoes, comfortable. You want to be able to shoot it very accurate as anything you shoot..........you own. So if you end up protecting yourself and shoot at someone, any bullets that go astray, then you have to deal with that.
You dont need a flashy gun as they are harder to conceal and hide. YOu also need to buy a good brand name gun. Yeah brand name as they have been doing it for years where these no name companies could kill you , literally.
I personally like the glock as a carry gun. It has the polymer frame so its light weight, its been known to handle the worse of areas and its not shiney and pretty. It also has 3 safetys...........one external double trigger (you have to pull both to shoot). Two is a firng pin Block, means the pin is blocked from accidentally firing. And 3rd is the firing pin location, its not even over near the bullet to keep from any accidental discharge. You can thro this gun down and it will never fire. Oh and one really important thing about the Glock is: it has no De-Cocker and no safety button. Why you ask, the de-cocker will and has been known to hang on clothes or holsters when quick drawing. The safety button is just going to get you killed. If you have it on, more than likely you will not remember to turn it off when you life depends on it (you usually have 2-3 seconds to live or die). So you draw and safety is on, you are dead.
People say guns without safety are dangerous........WRONG.........guns are not the item that are dangerous its the people. Get educated on your gun and how to carry it.
I have been carrying a gun for well over 15 years now and have never had any issue with not having a safety. Lack of education is the real killer, so take classes and get familar with your gun.
Oh one more thing, if you do carry, have it loaded, as a gun without a bullet in it, is just an expensive rock and your life depends on seconds if you were to have to use it.
I hope and pray we never have to use these guns but be trained just in case you do...............peace

Glock 22 (40 cal), used to be my carry gun. Plan to get a Glock 26 or 27 soon to carry again.
Scott, which do you like better the 26 or 27? I'm leaning toward the 26, lots of good 9mm ammo now, and super cheap to shoot.

I have my permit and I only carry when I go down to the land (middle of BFE cell phones do not work). When I carry it's just a little 9x18 with hollows. Never had to shot anything, but a stray dog that looked rabbit. and some beer cans every now and then.

Well Travis, the bigger the caliber the better for stopping power. Now the thing you have to think about with the 9mm is that it goes stright thru stuff kinda like a 22. So that is something to think about when you carry. The 26 and 27 is basically the same exact size gun other than the barrel. So the size shouldnt matter. If you plan on plinking around the yard and range than the 9mm will be much cheaper. Both are great guns and I own both myself. The cool thing about those minis are that you can get full size 17 round clips for backup and they fit perfect, just stick out alittle.

Concealed-Glock 20 10mm in the winter months, Glock 29 10mm in summer(easier to conceal under light clothing) both in a Fobus paddle holster.
Then often, when clothing permits, a Bird's Head 45-Long Colt single action in a crossdraw holster that rides just a couple inches left of belt buckle.
Open carry in certain places I have a Specter tactical thigh holster for the Glock 20, and carry the Bird's Head 45 without covering it.

I absolutely love 10mm. It's the ballistic equivelent of .41 Win Mag revolver cartridge. I plink/practice as much as possible with it thanks to having a good reload distributor nearby(Alabama Ammo in Moulton, AL).
10mm packs enough punch to make the sub-compact Glock 29 hard to handle. It's difficult to double tap the small frame 10mm, but even the full size model 20 isn't a cake walk when double tapping.

Billy, I would suggest not carrying a .380
take the worst case scenario, you get jumped by 2 guys that are jacked up on meth, one of them stabs your buddy to death, your forced to use your weapon, unless you put a round right between the guys eyes( wich probably wouldnt look good when you go to court) he's still gonna be comming after ya even when your clip is empty and be really pissed.
Now if you hit somebody with a .45acp, or a .44mag,.41mag,.40 ,10mm,etc. they're going down, at least long enough for you to put a bead on the other attaker.
however, I do fear large caliber weapons on the street, if it does get taken away from you and used against yourself, adios amigo. You also have to remember hunter saftey and know your target and beyond, so you don't kill 10 other people 100 yards away with penetrating or missed rounds.
I dont carry one, but keep a .45 in the truck or briefcase, I also carry a 12ga when I'm on the road.

Billy Golightly
05-04-2008, 12:54 PM
I agree completely nate, the .380 does not have the take down power of the .38sp or any of the other larger calibers you mentioned. When you move above the .380 though (exception being the airweight) the frame sizes seem to go up drastically. If I'm getting a gun to carry, I'm going to carry it all the time, and it needs to fit nicely and be comfortable in doing so or I'll be a lot less inclined to take it with me. A smaller caliber is better then no caliber. Maybe they are out there, but I have not seen much at all in the line of small frame .40s, .45s, etc. without them being saturday night specials.
My 44 Special isn't to bad to carry.
nate b
05-04-2008, 10:31 PM
snub nose 44sp would be sweet, I had a nice smith .357 5 shot revolver that was really thin. The .357 is kinda sissy, but its better than a .380. Another option would be a tiny can of pepper mace wich could potentialy save you from a life in prison. Or a good 6" hunting knife in the boot works well too.

I find it very interesting that even with all the new firearm technology in this day and age, there are still those who prefer revolvers. I know they have a lot of good qualities, but come on this is 2008. There is a reason almost all of the "professional" law enforcement agencies today no longer except them as service weapons. I still have my dads 357 magnum that he carried as a cop back when they were authorized. So I am fully aware of what one of them can do in skilled hands. But with the new breeds of automatics and the lighter and easier to conceal frames, I just simply cannot see any reason for them. Unless it is for sport or targets. Well, that is my opinion any way.
Oh yeah and Billy, I think the best way for you to get a permit is to join the military. Florida will except your DD214 in place of a class.

I think Indiana was the first state to offer lifetime carry permits. I got mine before some nut tries to revoke it. I like that I can carry to most other states because they have reciprocal laws with Indiana. Illinois is off limits, but I can carry down to Tennessee, Michigan, & Ohio without any problems. Indiana doesn't require you to carry concealed, but it's probably recommended so you don't start a panic at McDonald's or Wal-Mart.

Well here in TN, once the state took it over from the county, its considered a "carry permit". So that means it doesnt have to be concealed, but the law enforcement will frown on you for it. Plus the reason you are carrying a gun, is to protect you and your family/friends. So if the perp sees that you have a gun, who do you think they will go after first. Its all about the element of surprise, since your life will depends on just a few seconds.

Plus the reason you are carrying a gun, is to protect you and your family/friends. So if the perp sees that you have a gun, who do you think they will go after first. Its all about the element of surprise, since your life will depends on just a few seconds.

Well, I made a purchase, but it's not the Taurus I thought I would get. It's not even a Taurus, it's a Fusion Firearms 10mm auto based on a 1911 frame. I love the .45, but I've always wanted a 10mm. I consider it my gift to myself for making it through this deployment. This baby is a fully custom-made stainless masterpiece, made by Bob Serva, former president of Dan Wesson Firearms. This dude knows the 1911 inside and out. The best thing about it is that it was under $1400 with three magazines. Most custom .45s are on the north end of $1500 with only one mag, but this one has a lot more knock down power. I can't wait to break this bad boy in. :D

I dont really "carry" per se...However, I always keep some iron close by. Typically, in my truck...I always have a combat knife under the seat and my helwann 9mm close by. As far as my riding bag goes, the 9mm and the ka-bar along with some other various goodies are always thrown in regardless of how far or how long im going out. I can keep me outta most trouble scrapping, but if it came down to it a couple flicks with the 9mm should incapacitate well enough to get outta dodge, or if the situation was a bit more dire and get down and dirty with the old ka-bar. If i really needed the iron hopefully my "carry" items would keep me outta trouble long enough to get some firepower back at the house...
I usually like to keep some 00 and my trusty mossy 500 (sometimes a .308 AK) behind the seat if i know im going anywhere out of the ordinary. Eventually, im gonna pick up another pistol. I have a thing for the 6 1/2 inch raging bull chambered in .454....so that may be next on the list.
