My nephew has always loved all my 3 wheelers and going for rides on them. He could sit in front of me and ride for hours on end and NEVER want off. So her mom & dad got him a power wheels quad for his birthday a couple of weeks ago, he's 4. Now i doubt his parents will get him one anytime soon, but i was just wondering at about what age can i bring him home an eton 50 or whatever? He's naturally a very big kid, and size wise, i think he is already to big for the electric quad. But i dont want so sit him on yet; he's not ready and i don't want to run the risk of scaring him away. Pic:

personally i think he may be ready, just set the throttle governor so he cant go more than 3pmh or something, and he should be fine. and just raise it up as he gets more experience. my little cousin is like 5 or six and she rides a little Kawasaki 50 and shes pretty small and not very experienced

I think 5-6 years old is a good age to get them started on a small 50cc quad. A neighbor of mine has a kid that has been riding a eton 50 since he was 5 or 6, now is 7 and is tearing it up on a ttr90, probably already ready for a new bike.

It depends on the kid. If he's a hiper little guy i'd wait another year or so.
Mine started at 6 on a bike

My son started riding an alt 50 at 4 yrs old. I then got him an lt80 which he grew into and eventually raced and now he's on trx250ex at age 9. Start out slow, its amazing how fast kids learn on these things!
Thought I had a pic of him on the 50, but can't find it

I didn't get started on a motorized bike untill I was 12. I personally think it depends on skill and responsibility. In my mind though a child must be able to skillfully handle a non-motorized vehicle (a Bicycle) before they belong on their first motorized bike of any kind. Just my $.02

i started my brother on a 340cc snowmobile at the age of 4-5 years old. he started to help repair them when he was 5-6 years old and now that im into trikes he has picked up on it and built him self a 125m with a whole lot of parts from allot of other machines. its not a bad rig for being built by a 12 year old on a very tight budget.
anyway id say he is probably ready to get a 50cc mini quad type of ride. i mean there is omly one way to learn how to ride....that is get on it and try it.

i started riding at the age of 4. first ride was a 1969 broncco tx-6, a 50cc manual 2 stroke on-offroad bike. the thing is mean, and, well, thats what i learned to ride on.
sit him on one, or maybe a atc70, and govern it down a bit. as he learns, give him more and more GO till he can ride it without a govern.

my son started riding his zinger at 3 1/2, his sister got a kazuma quad at 3 and at 4 she is pretty good, but I am still afraid of letting her go around with the throttle screw completely out. Funny, I uncorked the boys zinger the second day he rode it. Could it be that scars on boys are cool and on girls....not so much?? LOL
those plastic electric POS are a waste of landfill space, not to mention money.

I'm going to have to stay start early, like the kids first trimester, get the mother learned on how to run a clutch while he's in the womb, that stuff filters back to the protege'

i got my 70...young, like 5 or 6. before that i rode my grandpa's bigred around the yard.
i remember when he got his 300 honda 4x4 like the first or second year they came out, i wasn't allowed to ride it alone because it was more dangerous (powerful) than the bigred. I don't even think i was four at the time.
If the kid is smart, he can be trusted. When he gets old enough to to be smart enough to take a screwdriver and take the governor out of the throttle on his own, that's when I'd say let him run free under supervision.
If he can start a 70 with a two handed pull, he can ride a 70. IMHO

My son had just turned 1 when he got his first powerwheel jeep. It was at the beginning of summer and we had to put a pillow behind him so he could reach the gas/juice. By the end of summer he was starting to get the steering thing down. He will be 2 this year and I think he will have the whole driving thing down by the end of summer. Maybe next year he will get an atc 70 or maybe the year after. It all depends on how he progresses and what I can get away with without the wife knowing.

You will know when the kid is ready, it's his mom that you will have to convince. you can govern the machine down so that it only goes as fast as a power wheels and they don't cost much more than one either. I gave my son a suzuki lt 50 for his 3rd birthday. All of the family was there for the party when I brought it out for him. My mother in law had to let me know of her dislike and that he was going to kill himself. anyway we started it up and he hit the gas and froze up doing just a little faster than I could run. He was heading toward the garage at full speed luckily my brother in law caught him. I will never forget the way my mother in law looked at me and said "I told ya so.." For his next ride I tied a rope to the back of the quad and made him go around me in a circle. I would tell him to stop and to go making sure that he got comfortable with the controls. After just a couple of days of this I cut the rope and he's been going ever since. now he's 13 and rides a 400ex better than most grown men. My 2nd son was 2 when I used to put a dog leash on the back of that lt50. I turned the idle up untill the quad would putt along about 3mph with him on it. and would walk him around the block letting him steer. I did the same with my daughter. All of my kids are good riders. It is a very good teaching device because when they don't listen to your instruction you just pull the plug on them.

you can actually get the mini quads no with a remote shut off. if something bad starts to happen, and the machine gets away from him, you hit a button and it shuts down.

That rope trick is worked great on my sons lt50. We did the same thing with going in circles then figure 8`s.

Kids are all different, but my oldest daughter started on an '87 LT80 at 6. She rode it in the yard the first summer till she could show that she had a handle on steering and brakes. I took her in the woods and she did well. I got rid of that junker (not all lt80s, just the one I had) and got her an '02 DS90 4 stroke in '04.
She still rides it at age 10.
Second daughter started on a TRX70 at age 5. Same deal with riding in the yard the first summer. After that, she's been in the woods and has no real problems with the trails. She's now 8.
Youngest daughter (4.5) is still on the power wheels a neighbor gave us. I'm thinking this summer I may have her try the TRX70 in the yard with the throttle stop all the way in and in 1st gear.
I think it has more to do with teaching them safely and slowly to help them get ready. If you wait till they're 8 before they try anything and you assume they know how to ride something because they're "old enough", you and they will be in for a rude awakening. Age doesn't always determine readiness. Good instruction, patience, and practice do.
Be safe and have fun with whatever you/they decide to do.

I picked up a 110 for my grandkids. They are 10,8, and 5. Needs some carb work and plastic. I'd like to get it going before it gets too hot.

well it was about 2 years ago (when iwas 12) when i started riding a 300 bayou that his friend was selling. the first time i drove was in 1st gear on our lawn with my dad sitting on the back rack.. he weighed more than me so everytime i tapped the throttle the friend end would come up, this lead to him yelling at me, realizing he was wrong, getting off. ive been riding that quad since :D

Today my 8 year old grandson tried to drive my motorhome. We forgot to lock it yesterday. He knocked it out of gear and it rolled down the hill. We were lucky nothing got damaged and no one got hurt.
