View Full Version : High reving on 86 tecate

Hi,

I was having problems with my carburator on my 86 tecate that kept overflowing.
But the bike was running fine.

So I checked the carburator and cleaned it completely.
I also had to bend the tang of the float a little bit so the fuel input closes sooner. And that solved my problem with fuel overflowing.

But now the trike will start fine, even on first kick, but as soon as it runs it will rev up very high. It did that in the past when it was cold, but not as much as now. Even without touching the gas it will rev very high.

My first thought was that there is an air leak, so I checked the intake boot for breaks, checked the seals on the crank, ... But these all seem to be OK.

Sometimes it runs perfect and I can give gas a couple of times and then all of the sudden it starts reving very high again.

What else is there to check beside the intake boot, engine seals ?
I also think my choke is not working, because it doesn't seem to have an effect on the way the engine runs, but it can just be an idea. Or can it leak air trough the choke ?

Any ideas are welcome.
And thanks in advance,

John

It could suck-in air through the choke, you might check there.

I'd check the lower cylinder gasket. Start it up, warm it, and at a steady rpm, spray carb cleaner or WD40 around the base of the cylinder and listen for change in rpms. If you get one, then the base gasket is leaking. I'd look there first.

Maybe a cracked case under or somewhere around the crankshaft.

Good luck finding it.

Well if you shut the gas off and run the carb dry it will rev high when it runs out of fuel (and possibly start to "diesel"). Maybe you are not getting enough gas now that you bent the float tangs and have created a lean condition. I bet if you open the throttle all the way the motor will stall.

What has changed? And now there is a problem.

Check the carb boots for damage?

is it revving while the choke is on?

This may sound kinda dumb, but here goes.
Check your throttle cable. sometimes they aren't routed quite right, and pull on the slide a little. I've had that problem once or twice.
Another thing is that you may have the float level too low. This would cause it to run lean after a bit of the fuel is used in the bowl.

Hi,

The very first thought I came up with was indeed the carb running out of fuel. I check this by connecting it to the fuel hose and tilting it a little bit. It began to overflow quite fast when tilting a little bit to one side. So I assumed that it was good.

Like nd4speed says, I did changes to my carb and I have the problem since than, so I'm going to check that carb over and over again this week-end.

Thanks all for the input, and I'll keep you guys posted

OK, the tecate is up and running again :)
I completely checked the carb and cleaned it again.
I also did a thin layer for sealant on the outside of the intake boot, that did the job. At least for now untill I have new intake boot.
It looks like the boot has some very little breaks, almost invisible, but probably enough for an airleak.

Thanks guys for the help :D
