The back end of my trike is loose and the previous owner said that the bearings had been replaced. I have not taken the thing apart so i don't know what is wrong with the thing but i was going to go ahead and replace the whole carrier with an aftermarket unit. Its is an 85' so i think i have to use an 86' sprocket with the 86' carriers. What i was wondering is this worth doing and what aftermaket carriers are good. I looked at some on ebay that come with all the stuff for around $200. What do you guys think? Matt

There have been some on there recently for 99$ that look to be well made and they have the bearings, tube and seal installed, must be a CNC run. I've had very good luck with OEM maintained. If they go to far, the axle gets worn or corroded where the bearing rides and even a new carrier doesn't fix it.

I think any of the double row or twin bearing setups should hold up better than OEM.

The rad carriers work pretty well for me, I woulnt pay 200 for it new but I only paid 200 for my whole trike so I left it on. I would stay away from the tapered timken bearings, they are just a pain in the ass in the long run.

DC, how exactly does the axle wear start? Thats what happened to my old axle and I didnt really know how to prevent it in the first place.

old bearings lockup and tear the axle surface up....a twin row bearing would be rideing on some ''new'' bearing surface and would be one way to use a axle with a stock single bearing surface problem

Any good way to fix an axle that is worn down where the bearing have been riding?

People talk about spray welding which of course would run 100$ plus EASY! but you have a 50$ - 150$ stock used axle.

I would just look for a good used replacement.

the rad carrier has been very good to me...and you dont need the 86 skrocket and bolts...just file the head down enought to clear the carrier...or like my 350x sprocket was made for the countersunk bolts...and i just wen to the hardware store and found bolts with smaller heads on them worked great for me
