I picked up a 1971 SL70 from my brother-in-law. In rough shape, but I can't decide wheter to put in $ into it or not. I don't know much about it, specs wise. Were these good streetable machines? I know it's a points ignition with the condenser on the coil and has the electrical for headlights and turn signals and all that. It appears that behind the airbox is a battery box? Is that right? Can I get a Lifan for it? This motor turns over easily, no exhaust, electrical parts in pieces, carb slide locked, clutch cable froze, tank in decent shape, seat decent, pogo's good front and back. If it's more trouble than it's worth, I might put the front end on 1 of my ATC 70's just for grins.

What years were they made? Will most parts interchange?

I'll try to get some pics up of it, it's in pieces. Just figured someone on here has had them, and might chime in.

Thanks

I had a blue one back in 72 or so, my god, I had a blast riding that around on the street !!

They go for a lot of $$ on ebay...... 500 right on up to 3000 (even more!!__:eek: ) depending on the shape they are in.

I'd restore it, just do a little at a time and keep the original engine, you put that Liflan in and that will depriciate the value instead of increasing it.

I can't recall what was behind the airbox but if you go on ebay and there are some on, (under Honda, then "other") usually if it is a nice one there are good detailed pictures which should answer that question.

A lifan will bolt in, but you also have the option of an 88cc kit that will bolt on. If you want real fun and you don't think the bike is salvagable, you can put the engine in an atc70 and have a honda manual clutch atc70. Those bikes had batteries for the lights and turn signals, but the engine started with the magneto. They were fun little bikes and really the cadillac of the small bikes in the early 70s. Some parts are priced a little high for them, but for the most part, parts availability isn't impossible. Have fun either way.

Thanks for the replies guys. Huffa, I think I'll take your advise and just get a few parts here and there and try to restore it, slowly! hehe.

I searched around ebay for a while last night, most parts look plentiful.

What years were they made?

The motor in the ATC has crossed my mind too! Just to have fun during the restore could I put my motor, kill switch, throttle off of my ATC right in the SL?

Here's some pics. I have the magneto and a side cover, but it's busted. I'm slowly gonna try and find parts for it and get it going, no show piece, just all there and rideable. I may sell the 200X to fund this, cause I have too much sh#% as it is (if that is possible).

Let me know whatcha think!

Will the motor drop right into my ATC?

Could I use the frontend on my ATC? That would be cool, even run the wheel and tire there too!

I could keep the ATC carb and throttle on there. Cut the rear fenders off, mine are junk anyway.

That may be what I do, cause it's ALOT of work on the SL that I really don't wanna do. It may end up as a free donor for the ATC.

That's SWEET!

Kasey, I'll be bugging ya with PM's if I start putting parts on the ATC. The SL motor may need too much work, (electrical and stuff), so I may try to put the SL front end on my ATC. What all could I put on the ATC off of it?
