This was the Tiger that was listed in the classifieds recently, I kept in contact with the seller, we worked out a deal, and both walked away happy.
I am satisfied with the condition of it, just needs a little work that I am more than willing to invest. Its actually in better shape than I expected and I found an unexpected surprise as well. Heres some pics after a little scrubbing here and there, plus some extras that came with it. As far as I know it is a 250cc Narrow Tire Version which was exactly what I wanted, I now have the 4 250cc LC trikes in one form or another which was a goal I had set for myself many years ago, and never expected to come true until much later in my life. I just thought I would share this personal acheivement with everyone at 3ww. HH

I run mine now and then, but not real hard just around the yard and run it on a "paved suface" to clean it out. I will have a pic taken next time , the weather is startinig to get nice. If I come up with some repro fenders :naughty: :naughty: then maybe I would get on it a little harder, but my fenders are original and uncracked.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I havent ridden it yet, needs some clutch work, not sure whats wrong yet. If anyone can PM me that has been into one of these id be grateful. Im betting its something simple. It fires right up in one or two kicks every time, no waterpump leaks either. Sounds great too!
As far as action shots go, i'll see what I feel like doing when I get it going, and dont expect to see any fenders on it (these are not perfect, but I intend to keep whats left of them intact.)

Thanks for all of the valuable info on your website OC, you can add this one to the 250 count if you would like. Things I noticed with this one are that the steering neck isnt stepped like all of the others on your page, and it has Kayaba Front Forks instead of Marzocchis, they look like they are original to the bike as well. just an FYI. Thanks again! HH

Glad you like the site...I have plenty of updates unfortunetly I am just a little to busy at the moment to complete that....I only have one tiger in MY collection with the step up stem....the rest are like yours....they are a slightly earlier model with the step up. looks like the rear of your fenders are trimmed....if you do a search I have fixed that problem on two sets of my rear fenders. Savor that shroud....dont break it!!!

If it has not been ridden in awhile, the Rotax clutch will temp lock up. Put in 2nd or 3rd gear and roll it back and forth a few times. Also the adjuster in the center of the clutch cover, needs to be screwed in untill it touches and then backed off 1/4 to 1/2 turn. There should be a way to lock and unlock the set screw. If you need some tips on the clutch adjustment go to the Classic Can-Am site and search around a little. Good info and a couple sources for engine parts.http://www.atkmotorsports.com/atkbb/viewtopic.php?t=313&highlight=406+clutch Hopefully this link will work. It guides you through adjusting the clutch.

just a little update... been super busy at work and just getting little things done on the tiger here and there. got the front hub all pretty with new paint, and wheelbearings. and FINALLY got the resivoir back for the rear shock. sent it off 4 months ago! Figured I would share the results and ask if anyone knows what the recommended Nitrogen PSI would be for this shock?

the bypass hose was shot so I had this one made and used swivel fittings on it and a 45 at the shock so I can run the line a little better. (old one got a hole poked in it from the stud on the seat pan, now that wont happen again.)

going slow still but heres what I got.

New front tire. Duro 21inch HF245. Not a Tri-Trac but it will do. (nothing else out there with a neutral tread) the Hoosier will become a wall ornament I guess. (its TOAST)
Have a Cheng Shin and 11 inch Mitchell Wheel for it as well.
Found some Armstrong Tires, but im pretty sure these Nankangs are what
it came with. so they will stay for now.
Also found some Red Answer Handlebars, But the Hallman Bars will stay for now. (I like em)
New Magura Master Cylinder
New Magura Clutch Lever
New Upholstery (did that a while ago, but figured id snap a better pic.
turned out awesome.)

Messed with the clutch some, think I got it figured out. FINALLY.
Wont know for sure until I ride it again.

Pics!!

HondaHarry
09-10-2008, 11:26 AM
thanks for the compliments bob! I had the seat redone by a local upholstery shop, had him copy the cover that was on it. the red is a little on the bright side, but it still looks good.

I thought I was going to have it torn clear down for frame pc, but decided to wait and hang onto some cash for some of the repro fenders when they are ready. that and its easier to keep track of all the parts when they are still on the bike. HH

Those rear fenders look different from what I've seen before. What's the story there?

HondaHarry
09-13-2008, 12:40 AM
I suspect they were broken in the rear like others I have seen, so they look like they have been placed on a table saw or something and the tail section has been cut off to make it look better. I didn't do it and neither did the guy I got it from... :) the front is what's left of a maier 250R? fender that's probably been on the bike for 20 years.

Motor is done! (inspected it and found a brand new piston, and visible crosshatch in the cylinder! no wonder it runs so good. it looks like it was never ran after the top end was done, everything shows no signs of wear)

Rewound the kicker spring. (EASY, took like 5 minutes, spring was OK)

Clutch basket, Hub and Fibers/Steels, look brand new. pulled apart cleaned and reassembled, should be good to go.

Thats my best friend Tyler helping my tear it down. (im behind the camera)

Frame waiting for some small repair work, then its off the the Powdercoaters

Have all new bearings waiting here for it.

That frame is looking good. Your Tiger will start going together pretty fast now. There is not too much too them at all. Do you have your new bushings for your swinger. I was lucky that a set of new bushings came with all my extra parts. I had mine running Sunday which was really nice after all the things that happened with the engine. Is your shock ready to go on? You'll be really happy when it's a roller again. Hopefully fenders soon.

Did you decide where you are buying the front axle and swinger bolt from. I have some swinger bolts to zinc plate but need some more. I remember holic a few years back got them from northern equip (go cart axle?) As for the front axle I have bashed the crap out of a few of them trying to get them out. the brakes were tricky... PITA to bleed the rear caliper. Had to take it off the swinger to get it to bleed right, took a long time to get it just right but I got it. front caliper didn't give me as much trouble but had me cussing for a minute or two. Getting the rotors clean and flat was a project as well. I purchased some extra rotors, but they were worse than the originals. they will make some nice wind chimes. lol I decided during the build that if I could (in my opinion) improve on any part that needed work I would, so I used SS for the axle and swingarm bolt, and used nylock nuts, instead of castle nuts. every old nut and bolt has been saved, so if I decide to refinish them later I can. I am doing everything to the best of my ability, and so far I have been extremely happy with the results! I want to do another one! HH

Just want to get it fired up and running good before teardown, so we can rule out any existing issues before any disassembly. It's nice that the 200 is just a sleeved down 250, so it makes life a lot simpler. You already know what it takes to put a Tiger together so this should be a snap. And you got the shock with it, a big bonus. That is really what I need to do my second Tiger. I also noticed that you have a dual position swingarm, meaning left and center shock mount. Is your frame set up for left and center shock mounting? If so, then you even have a more transition frame than I do since my second 250 frame is center shock mount only, but it's not the last generation "Doctor Death" style Tiger. Where did you manage to shake this one out of the woodwork from? Every Tiger has a story. Congrats on your latest find.

Bought it from Chris Cooper. Found him on another website, and saw a mention
of it in one of his threads, so I sent him an email to see if he was willing to chat about tigers in general, we stayed in touch and swapped stories (his are much better than mine btw.) Later we discussed if it was for sale, it wasnt, so I told him I would help him in any way I could when he was ready to fix it up. he decided it was not going to work out, and graciously offered it to me. I made some phone calls, and sealed the deal. I promised him it was going to a good home. maybe these pics will look familiar. HH

Ahhh Chris's machine!!! I thought something looked familiar but I wasnt able to place it. That one has a nice racing past!!!! I chatted with him a while back..2 years?? ago..hence the pictures on the tiger site. I bought an extended swingarm off him. When I bought my dunlap machine from brian in Michigan he new Chris and had raced with him. I beleive I offered money back then but he didnt want to sell it. Great score.

umm yeah. about this one... guess I got spoiled the first time around.
Showed up this afternoon, and I had to bust some skulls at the shippers
office. Driver showed up and handed me a bill for 1100 dollars shipping!
Got on the phone, and "politely" corrected their error, and got it sorted out
for the most part. wound up paying more than they quoted me, but nowhere
close to what the bill said.

Got it off the trailer and started dragging out parts...
tried to prepare myself for the carnage, I cant say I was surprised
but I cant say I wasn't disappointed either.
20 years is rough on a tiger. lots of good, but man the motor is toast!
And its a 200. no biggie, dosent look like i'll be using much if any of
the engine parts. rest of it isnt that bad. Several parts missing, but nothing I cant make on my own.
I couldnt help but slap whats left of the fenders that it came with it on the restored 200. kinda weird seeing it with fenders and a correct blue seat. lol oh yeah, frame number on this one is 111. probably one of the last if not the last 2nd gen tiger. Not sure whats gonna happen with it at this point. worst case I have all the parts to make the restored 200 100% authentic. even got 2 original phone cords with it. hehe (inside joke)

pics...

It never amazes me how some of these trikes end up. Some are way worse than others. Once proud warriors are reduced to a pile of rusty almost useless bit and pieces. It's hard to believe sometimes that there is a trike with a real history somewhere in the pile. It takes alot to put these machines back together anywhere near their former glory. You did manage to get some of the harder bits to find, which is really good. Not a total loss, just a challange! LOL I need to find a nice shock or 2. Keep us posted on your progress. Another labor of love starts.

You don't really part these out. Even if you only find a few bits and pieces, you hang on to what you have. The couple of "Tiger only" pieces are hard to find if you need one. But if you do part it out, I sure would like to have first dibs on that shock!!!!

Nice looking job HH, there's something about these Tigers that put them in that top place above the rest, as far as the way they look and designed in my opinion. Hard to stop with just one . I love mine, starts and runs excellent but it seems like the performance is down compared to the other zingers. Have fun with your second rebuild.

Sweeet , What the decal on the tank say??

heres the stickers.

got the transmission assembled today without a manual!
cleaning up better than I thought it would... If I can find some
cases, clutch cover and stator cover I think I can make it run!
Tried to clean them up, barely usable. major corrosion going on.
waterpump is decent though. go figure. moisture and magnesium
make for a bad combo... cases and stator cover shouldnt be
too difficult. I am looking for a clutch side cover in a bad way...
a sidedraft intake style one would be cool as well just to
get it running. if anyone has any leads PM me. HH

couple updates, need to get pics.
Got the tank wetsanded and buffed out.
Forks almost done, Shock needs the spring powdercoated still.
Got the wheels polished almost to where I want them.
All new bearings here. Axle/hubs/etc stripped and ready for zinc plating.
Brake Calipers and Rear Master Rebuilt, still need brake pads.
Radiator cleaned out, fins straightened, and painted.
thats the big stuff so far. HH

thats the original pipe after a bunch of work, not a new one. :)

And can any Tiger experts tell me if thats an original shroud?
Seems like ive seen them in various photos. either way, I cleaned
it up, and made it look good, ignore the fingerprints. lol HH

what did you have to do to get the pipe to look like that. steel wool?

HondaHarry

I used a fine wire wheel with light pressure on an an angle grinder,
then sanded with WD40 and 600 grit sandpaper, then finish sand with WD40 and 2000 grit. Then reblued the welds afterwards with an oxy/acetyline torch with a small flame. took about 4 hours start to finish. I wipe raw pipes down with WD40 and a scotchbrite pad every time I ride or wash the bike to prevent rust. Its not very humid here, so I can get away with minimal rust issues. Results may vary depending on climate. :) HH

HondaHarry

more shiny stuff that was rusty when I started.

Soaked in Evapo-Rust for a day, then wire wheeled
then sanded with 400 grit, then 800 grit on a D/A sander.
4 peices of sand paper per side. about an hour of sanding.

Still pitted, and not perfect, but it works.

These tiger rotors like to go concave on me, so surface
grinding dosent work. Doing it this way is time consuming,
but dosent destroy the rotor. HH

:naughty: Helps to have a friend with a waterjet and amazing talent. Many thanks to Charlie Smith at Pro-Cutting. Havent really figured anything out with production yet since I dont want to step on anyones toes as I know there were others that wanted to make these. So far these are one off items. The one in the photo is an aluminum prototype to see how it will look. Final versions will most likely be 304 Stainless Steel.
Just thought I would share. HH

Rotax sure had some very unique ideas on how to build a 2stroke engine. The biggest, and most obvious design flaws was the carb being so far away, which makes fine tuning very difficult due to poor signal. And the transfer volume being so small, which severely limits high rpm horsepower potential. It appears as though one cyl is iron lined, while the other is nicom?

Definitely Unique, but thats what I like about them. Considering the dated design of the engine, the power they make is impressive, high rpm power not really, but it makes plenty everywhere else. My running 200 is just as modified as the non running one, and it does pretty good. I dont doubt that it makes 40hp. The 250s are rated at 43. Its almost like a 4 stroke, lots more midrange torque than you would expect thats for sure. Both cylinders are iron lined, the 250 is 72mm bore, and the 200 is 64.5mm, both 61mm stroke. I just picked up some NOS Oversize 200cc Wisecos as well, so I will attempt to resurrect the other 200 eventually. But for now, I got this to play with. :) HH

HondaHarry
09-22-2011, 09:54 PM
It runs! Sounds good too. The ring is a little out of spec, but the bore and piston measure dead on to the same specs as new.
Has TONS of compression, but im going to get a new piston coming, and all new seals etc. just to do it right. Replaced the clutch basket
with a better one, and put it back together, shifts thru all the gears, and has good spark. And of course I had to make it pretty.

Glad I got to move forward on this one again. I think I like building them as much as I like riding, it frustrating, but very satisfying
when it all comes together. 132169

Looks great! And i'm with ya on building them. So much satisfaction goes into making these things great. Frustrating? Oh yeah, at times for sure. But in the end, it's always worth the effort to ride something "we" made great once again. For me, it's as much hobby as it is having something to ride.

Harry, I always enjoy your postings. You always manage to come up with a goodie or 2. I hope you and Ron and his brother aren't getting into too much trouble out in Utah. I hope you're still feeling well. Thanks for keeping the Tiger faith. Finally got my carbs back from ACE. Worth every penny as well as the wait time. Posted a link to my engine running with my new carbs in the Tow'd thread. Stay well. Say "Hello" to the guys for me.
