Hey guys I am trying to replace the rear brakes on my 84 big red 200.
She is the shaft drive model with reverse and hi/lo ratio.
I have taken the ring of bolts off the end diff housing and have pulled the housing back to see the brake shoes.
There is 2 large nuts on the axle,I have loosened the inner one the outer is stuck fast. There is two rings inside the inner nut which spin but don't seem to do much. What do i need to do to remove the axle so i can get housing off then on again? Thanks your help would really be appreciated.:beer

You should NOT have to take apart the differential to replace the brake shoes. Just the brake drum cover (if it has one) then the drum itself. You are working from the right rear aren't you?

I just looked at the schematics, and you do have to take those lock nuts off to get the brake drum off. There is a HONDA PART for this: LOCKNUT SPANNER 41MM PART NO. 07916-9580200 AND WRENCH SET 41MM PART NO. 07916-9580300. I never worked on a 200es so I don't know if you HAVE to use these tools or not.

I'm a little confused. When you say you have loosened the inner nut I'm assuming you mean the axle nuts? They are supposed to be jammed against each other in normal operation so in order to loosen the inner the outer has to first be broke loose. Like Genius said, I always use a big pipe wrench unless I have access to a cressent that big and having someone help hold the rear tire helps a lot too. Be sure to clean the threads on the axle real good with a brush and use plenty of penetrating oil to make sure they don't gauld. You can also use two hammers to "ping" the nuts by holding one on a flat of the nut and hittig the flat on the opposite side with the other hammer. do this on all the flats and most of the times they will come loose. You will have to at least get the nuts to the axle hub to be able to slide the brake backing plate out far enough to get to the brakes. Best I can remember there is an oring behind the washer behind the nuts that can give you a hard time too if you don't get it out of the way. There's also a sleeve or spacer that runs through the bearing on the backing plate that will have to be cleaned up good enough to slide through the bearing unless you plan on knocking the axle out of the sleeve. Oh, the bearing is supposed to have a snap ring on the backside of the backing plate holding it in so don't try to pry the backing plate off the bearing while it's still on the axle or you'll wind up looking for one on Ebay. hope this helps.
