Ok...I am about 90% done with this thing. I will give everyone another run down of this Tri Z.
Bought it: In boxes completely dissassmebled. I have never ridden or started it. Risky!
Project Status: Almost there except I am waiting on a rear axle from a guy on ebay. He is being very slow...anyone have one to sell me?
Some project information If you are rebuilding a Tri Z:
1) The top cap which covers the airbox was originally from an 85 model with the black color. I had it professionally painted with matching factory paint and covered with 5 coats of 'flex coat'. Even if the plastic bends quite a bit the clear coat won't crack. I just can't flip the thing over and drag that part on the dirt (obviously). The frame as you can see was also painted then given 4 or 5 clear coats.
2) All decals with the exception of the one on the lower headlight were custom cut. Its great because I can add more in places I want
3) Seat cover - it looks really shiny and red. Anyone who has tried to buy aftermarket covers for Tri Z's knows that mostly they are a dull red that does not really match. Plus they also have that ugly stitching everywhere. I just went to an upolstry (sp?) shop and found a matching vinyl, heated it up, and streched that mother like crazy over the seat stapled. The pics don't do it justice the red is just beautiful.
4) Throttle cover - the Yamaha raised lettering is there I just took some sand paper and started sanding the paint off of it so it stood out.
5) Wheels and Tires - These have already been purchased and wil be from the Banshee. You also must buy the hubs as well. All will fit on the axle splines.
Its been a fun project and I am literally going crazy waiting for the axle. This trike WILL only see action in the clean sand dunes of West Texas in the town of Kermit. It will never again see mud, extreme dust, or gravel. She survived the bone pile and I intend to keep her looking sharp!
Thats about it...thanks for looking!

this is the last one for now. I decided that since she will be doing time at the dunes she needs to look the part.
I had the gas tank gaurd (originally black) chromed. I also had an old grab bar that I bought on ebay. So I had it sanded and chromed to a better than original finish. The DG silencer is new and I found it on ebay. I just painted in the DG lettering with a matching automotive touch up paint.
Lastly the compression adjustment knob was brass plated with some 14K gold mixed then laquer was added.
I wish I could post the pics on the website...because to get them to load I have to blur them up somewhat by reducing the resolution...but you get the idea...

I purchased the trike for $800. However the owner gave me so many extra parts that I started selling them on ebay. I have gone through the first set of parts (black fenders, front rear, tires, wheels, white fenders, etc) and managed to pull $796.00 for all that stuff. All the money (except about $45.00) has been collected.
As far as the cost of all the other additions (new rear fenders, frame painting, silencer, banshee tires, wheels, etc) I would say I am in it about $600, but still have about $300 worth of parts I still have not sold. In the end I should be out about $350 to $400 bucks...
Crazy isn't it...

I have 3 9 inch rims to sell. One of them still has the original rear tire on it. I will be putting them up on ebay pretty soon. I don't know what they are worth, etc.

You should consider dropping Dirt Wheels a line about your restoration - maybe they'll show some interest.
Hey Darius in all those extra parts, do you happen to have a good 85 Tri-Z shifter? Somehow, mine is rounded out, beyond repair, but the splines on the shift shaft itself are still good? WTF?

could be it is 15 years old, and a 3 wheeler gets slammed with a lot more stuff, my freinds tri-z has the same problem, i rode it and one time the thing bent rite out along side the footpeg, the thing is shot, but it has lasted a good long time. i'm not a fan of Yamaha, but tri-z'a are wicked wheelers.

Chainsaw,
Don't even worry about it... I won't ever sell it. Crap..its been too much work putting it together. I bought it because it reminds me of when I was a young kid back in '86.
It may be silly but between that trike and my Quadzilla...sometimes I just sit back, have a beer, and look at them. For some reason it just relaxes me!
I won't ever sell it and let one who does not know what the heck it is destroy it in 6 months...however there are some young kids on here that have alot of respect for trikes so I don't mean to single anyone out.
Another pic and thanks for the support everyone!
Just wish me luck...because I have not ever started it yet!! It may look pretty but lets hope the damn thing runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do have the reciepts from the owner which show a top end job, new bearings in the cases, etc. We will see...

Dude...its not that big a deal....I can find you one and tell you everything I did. You could do it yourself Most of the plastic is still around so whats the rest of it...paint? Well thats the easiest stuff to redo...just get a good chrome and paint shop.
I think I could redo this project with other trikes 100 times over...you just have to be an anal trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro about things...
It just takes too much time and is frustrating because once you want and expect one thing to be perfect you want everything perfect....it wears me down

Oh I can build mine to match.. its just finding the time to do it, and having the patience.. I have to many irons in the fire 99% of the time, and rush things..
