How would this bike compare, sizewise to a new crf450? about the same as far as seat height and stuff? looking at an 88.
about what would a good shape 88 be worth?
and lastly, how does the bike compare to a 250 in weight, handling, and just overall ridability (not counting any issues caused by the insane powerband)
i have heard the 500's are just like a 250, but with insane amounts of power.
I can't attest to the size comparisin, but as far as rideability, they're awesome. I had an 86, and it was a DAMN good trail bike, of course, I'm not a hard rider, but it had tons of power everywhere and you could lug it around. There's not really a powerband, or a "hit", it's just got it everywhere, as long as you could resist from pulling it WOT they're great riders, I was riding around in 4th one time kinda lower speed and decided to try and burn out, put it WOT the damn thing stood straight up. I think the 88s have less power than the 86s did though. As for price, I paid 800 for mine, it was in very good shape, had aftermarket kick stand, FMF pipe and pipe guard. Only thing wrong cosmetically was the original seat had about a 1 inch rip in it....kinda wish I still had it.

I think you'll find the 500CR to be a larger feeling bike. The 450f will have a much thinner feel in the seat and pegs. The frame I believe between the seat and pegs is shorter on the 450f but not by much. I can tell you the CR500 motor is alot of motor for any trail...but kills in any open area. Top speed is close between the two its just how you get there being different.

In a honest comparison, there is none. The CRF450 will take the CR500 in every aspect. The CR500 is a powerhouse, but the frame geometry is for Baja racing. Years ago people raced the CR500 and it is awesome to see, but the fact is the rake is long and tight turns aren't easy. The aluminum frame, narrow tank, plush suspension and super fast high revving motor on the CRF450 is a monster on the supercross or supermoto tracks. The CR500 is a awesome bike and I would buy it in a heart beat, but to compare the two is not a good comparison. I hope you buy both and have the best of old and new!!!!

ill bet a cookie that a down the road race, the 500 will eat the 450 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner......i took my buddies down the road the other day. it was fast, but i wasnt amazed my the acceleration....i have a harder time by far keeping the front end on just a 250 on the ground.......

Does your friend have a CRF450? If he does, then Honda has a gear position sensor. A gear position sensor is basically traction control like on a formula 1 car. The lower the gear, the lower the power output to reduce wheel spin and thus reducing the capability of doing all out wheelies. I was not downing the CR500 at all, I love them and always will, but the new 450s in any brand are superior to any older bikes. Wheelies don't relay horsepower amount, short wheelbase or body position on the bike helps dictate wheelies. Cr500 are a monster and you feel the monster swell and leave, but don't let the 450 smooth power delivery and don't forget if you don't hold it open long enough to get in the 450 power than you didn't feel any of its true potential! Riding a bike down a street is hard to get the real feel of a bike, take your buddies to the track or a big pasture and hold the throttle and get into the high revving meat of the 450 motor!!!

Being the owner of an 89 Cr500, I have to call BS on this post. If the rider knows how to ride a fiver, going around tight corners is as easy as hitting the throttle. A nice blip on the throttle and you can peel around the corner instead of actualy turning through it. And the 450 dont take the 500 in every aspect....A good set of tires and a rider that knows his *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* goes a long way when trying to compare the two. Also naturaly the Cr500af tested against the Crf450 ended in the 450 sitting on the losers bench. The 500 comes down to rider...not the age of the bike or what it was made for.
