I have an '86 350X.....having a problem finding neutral. When you are in first and click the shifter lever up a hair, it goes into neutral but then seems to drop back into first when you let off. If I play with it enough, it'll eventually stay in neutral when the trike is not running, but with it running, it is impossible to get it into neutral. It seems to be extremely hard to click up and the pressure needed to click it up sends it to 2nd gear. I have the clutch cable adjusted correctly. It seems to be something inside the clutch. I just bought this trike today, and it supposedly has a new clutch in it.
Thanks for the help!!!

I know someone out there has to be able to know something......I know I havent been on the site in a while, but that's because circumstances at home forced me to get rid of m 85 350X a couple years ago. Now I have this 86 350X that I got from a guy in Florida through Ebay. I really dont know why this thing is so difficult about going into Neutral.....
Any help??? Please?

id take the flywheel cover off and have a look as to whats going on in there.
could be the spring loaded arm that rides on the shift star

that's just it.....I dont know ANYTHING about clutches....so I dont really know what to be looking for. And the trike shifts fine and I dont want to mess that up. Just very hard to find Neutral.

um......the clutch is not under the flywheel cover.......but the flywheel is....lol
take the cover off the shifter side of the bike and look at the shifter linkage and everything

It's either a linkage problem, somethings loose or the clutch basket is grooved all to hell......
Not understanding it is fine, but your gonna have to get the shop repair manual and look at the parts to even begin to understand HOW they work.
Honestly, I learned by taking apart crappy motors. Spin this, lift that, reinstall parts etc etc and you'll figure out how everything works.
Most all of these motors do the same job, just a bit differently....
Buy a 40$ EBAY motor and mess around with it's little inside organs.
Don't forget the manual :)

I have 2 350X's both really nice bikes that are nearly impossible to find neutral with them running.
Even todays motocross racing bikes, all hopped up 4 strokes, it is nearly impossible to get them to start in gear with the clutch pulled in , and it is very difficult to get them into neutral when they are running, you will even see pro riders have a really hard time, or even use there hand to shift it into neutral when they stall it.
It is a pain it he arse. I am sure there is somethings that can be done to help, but Ive leasrned to just pull to a stop and shut the bike off if I want neutral.
Both my bikes have about 60 hours on them. I have had them bothe since they had around 25 hrs. even then 1 was really hard to find neutral, and one was semi hard .
Maybe somebody who just put a new clutch in can enlighten us?
My current clutch has the right amount of freeplay and tons of adjustsments left. I only use Honda GN4 oil for wet clutches, so i know it's not the oil.
It's just a big low end torque monster, with a 250R clutch in it :)
