I hate the decompression cable on the 84 200S...maybe I don't know how to hook it up or maybe it just sucks, but either way mine doesn't work. Question is....

Would an 84 Honda 200ES head (with that nice decompression lever) fit onto an 84 200S?????? Has anyone done this??? My 200S is bored once over and has a higher compression piston in it so it is hard to pull!

Thanks!

Kris

Does anyone know?

Yes, direct swap. All you need to change is that top cover, not even the whole head.

I believe you can pull out the decompression lever from the 200s head and slide in the lever with the hand tab on it without having to change the whole cover assembly, can't remember for sure though on that.

Fox. So if this swap is done, how will the lever with the tab close after the starter is pulled?
On my 200s, I took the decompression lever and cable off because I was rebuilding the pull starter but the damn decom. cable was too much of a pain to hook back up inside the starter so I just left it out.
If I try this swap I would be using a top cover from a 200e.

The lever holds the exhaust valve open slightly for the first engine rotation, after the exhaust valve is opened by the cam the lever will snap back and the valve can close fully

The lever on my 200s right now doesn't have the cable hooked to it. If I flip the lever and pull the starter it will just stay open. Before I rebuilt my starter I would open the lever and give it about 2-3 pulls, then manually flip the lever closed. Then pull the starter and crank it. This seemed to insure an easy pull to start it and have less strain on the starter rope. But I never got the motor to start while the lever was in the open position.
So if I put the decomp. lever off a 200e on my 200s, should the lever close automatically after each pull, or when the motor starts?

I guess an easy way to put it is whats the difference between a cable operated lever WITHOUT the cable hooked up, and a lever w/tab not made to work with a cable.

Well I think I answered my own question. I just looked at the lever on the 200s and when I had taken the cable off I had disconnected the lever return spring. I put it back and now the lever closes after the starter is pulled.

Cant you just take the pin out of the 200s cover and replace it with the lever off a 200e? Looks the same width

Well from what I can tell there is no difference between the two levers once you unhook the cable from the 200s.

So why does the 200ES lever "stick" in place when you push it up? The 200S lever returns back down once you push it up (decomp. cable detached). I haven't taken a great look at it yet, but I think I may just be able to get an ES lever and put it on the 200S and just remove that stupid decomp. cable to recoil setup all together. Think that would work?

Once I hooked the return spring back on the lever (after taking the cable off of it) it does stay stay in place when flipped open, and closes after pull starting it.
So if you want your lever to act like the one on a 200es just un-hook the cable.

Are you sure your pushing the lever all the way? You can take the cable off and not use it, thats what I did. You have to un-hook it from the decompression lever then take your pull starter off, pry the plastic ring out and then you can take the cable off.
