Im lookin at a yz 80 for really cheap. the guy did a top end rebuild and has the recits for it. he however cant get it going because he says the timing plate is off or something and its not firing at top ded center. Im very famillar with fore strokes but no 2 strokes..Does this make sense what he said and if so how hard would it be to fix?

Probably the flywheel key starting to shear.

If it's just the flywheel key, or something minor like the pickup coil mount plate coming loose, that's an easy fix. If the flywheel itself is starting to wear out in the key area, or your keyway in the crank is torn off, then that's when it starts to get pricey, but hell, a whole new Hot Rods crank for one of these little zingers is only about 160 bucks.

A new flywheel key = $10 maybe
New flywheel = $80 for the OEM part, probably more
New crank = $160 for a Hot Rods unit, probably around 200~250 for an OEM unit.

It all depends on how much you wanna spend. I just got done tinkering with a YZ80 for my friend, and it's been through about 6 owners (including me) on the stock piston, bore and cylinder. Those things are remarkably tough if you take care of them, and they're not that expensive to fix when you DO break something because they're so simple. I crashed mine all the time and never broke anything important (plastics only).

How much are you going to spend on it to buy it? You could probably sell it for 600 or so bucks when it runs good, possibly more if you stick a new set of plastics and seat cover on it. Paint a few of the parts, paint the frame and you could maybe get 1500 out of it. They cost about 3200 here (out of the dealership).
