I bought the tri-moto about a week ago and it has absolutely no compression. I poured a little Bel-Ray in the plug hole and it gained quite a bit so I know it needs a piston and rings. First of all do the 175 motors have to be yanked to be rebuilt because it looks like it has full length studs like a four-stroke. Also I am not really familiar with Yamahas so if anyone knows who has the best piston deal, I was thinking a Wiseco from Procycle. One thing I noticed is it may need to be rejetted, for some crazy reason I actually got it to start by pushing it but it runs very week. when I open it up it goes through 1st and 2nd great and then 3rd gear it bogs bad and I can back it off to half throttle and it will run good. Even though the things about to kill over I did beat my brothers 200s which surprised me for how weak it runs. I thought about milling the head too maybe .020 just to give it a little more power. Any Yamaha guys who have built these trikes I'd love to hear your input and what works best for Yammys! Thanks!

my tri motor was pretty quick. it would smoke my atc 125m...lol.. it actually hung with my buddys blaster. the blaster had much more top end speed though.

Well to answer the question at hand.
The tri-moto head should actually be held on by bolts going down through the head. and then the cylinder is held on by studs coming up from the bottom end.
I do believe you can do a top end without removing the engine. Try taking the head off for starters and I think you'll see what I mean.
I will warn you I'm pretty ure the little 2 stroke tri-motos are notorious for looseing the crank seals and then obviously the crank. I would do my best to check those as well if I was you.
