Hey guys i did a quick search here, but can i swap a complete rear axle, carrier, rotor, sprocket, and wheel hubs into an 85 swinger? I would be basically looking for anything 85-89 250R and giving it a shot. Has anyone done this? Any issues or reason i simply can't do it? If it wont work in an 85 for any reason other than the brake caliper mounts can i get an 86 swinger and be good to go? Thanks in advance, TC...

I "thought" the TRX swinger was an inch shorter....

I know the 85 carrier is for 85 only as far as swapping the complete swinger off a 86 to a 85 ???????
Yes you have to run the 85 carrier with the 85 swinger. The 86 and up axles will fit the 85 carrier. All the hubs sprockets and brake rotors will fit too, from 85 all the way up to 89. 86 atc,and 86 TRX and 87 TRX swingers will fit the 85.
We just converted one of our 85 R rear ends to the whole 86 set-up.
Here is a link to that.

Thanks mosh i recall that thread, maybe my wording was confusing so i'll try to lay it out a little better.
1. I have an 85 swinger/rear end on my R and i went to the dealer and they want nearly 75.00 for bearings/seals
2. I figure i can buy a billet carrier for 100-125 and have all new stuff
3. Should i just buy the PEP 85 billet carrier or would i be better off buying a complete 86-89 set-up which includes carrier, axle, hubs etc...
4. If the complete trx style carrier and axle wont fit in the 85 swingarm would it fit in an 86 ATC swinger?
5. And last but not least are the cheap (less than half the cost from honda) bearings on ebay any good? Would i be better off with them?? I dont ride a lot but when i want to ride i prefer my machines to be turn key.
thanks for the responses but i still dont know what to do. I dont mind spending the money for a later model set up that would be mostly aftermarket if it will work. I'd like a wider axle anyway so i can rid of the spacers it had when i got it. Plus i figure my good condition 85 rear end has to be worth a few bucks to offset the price and make it worth while, TC...

here is the simple solution:
85 is on its own. The carrier is smaller. The 86-89 is all the same. I own both an 85 and 86R If you own the 85R, I would suggest a billet double row carrier. It will last a long time and is a good investment. I would not waste the money to convert the whole rear over to the 86-89 unless you can't find the parts you need. Aftermarket bearings are OK. They all go bad eventually, so I would not waste the money on Honda OEM if it is not necessary.

Ok so it looks like i should go with an 85 specific billet dual row carrier (is one better than the other? I've only found PEP for 85's, but i have a Boss in my 350X), and then i can slap any (85-89) aftermarket axle in there when i find one for a good deal and all of my hubs with work without issues. Sounds good to me, plus i'd rather not swap out everything or spend 75.00 on oem bearings...

No you cannot!! the rear sprocket on the 85 will hit the 86 swinger,
you need an 86 swinger
I agree, stay with the 85 rear end.It is more cost effective.
I have All Balls bearing kits in stock for those.$40 shipped.

OK so ill get the 85 bearings for the time being, can i install an aftermarket axle for an 86-89 250R and use all of my stock 85 hubs? If not how much should i expect to pay for an 85 only wide axle? Thanks again guys, sorry for all the questions...
