What all has to be changed when putting an 86 swinger on an 85? I already have the axle, carrier and brake stay. Is that it or do I need to change the O-rings and rubber pieces at the pinch bolts? Any thing else need changing?

I believe you have everything
All you need (quick rundown from memory)
86 Swinger
86 Carrier/brake stay
86 Axle
and the Orings for the carrier should be 86
The 85 caliper works just fine, it just has that extra "arm" where the torque link attaches
85 Brake lines, parking brake (if used) and shock linkages are all the same
I have done this on my 85 (now 86) 250R and had no problems with the conversion
Only problems i ran into were in the frame swap

So do I have to have the 86 O-rings? If i'm not mistaking some run without them- but that is if I'm not mistaking.

It looks like the 86 brake stay has a different mounting pattern for the brake of an 85- the 86 holes are farther apart. Do you just drill new ones?

That can be an option or just get an 86 caliper, you have 2 choices to go with.

My 85 caliper bolted right up to my mount

you need to look at an 86 swing arm and weld a small piece of round stock to it with a grove machined in it for a c-clip.

In my picture above I'm running the 86 Axel, the 85 bearing carrier, and the 86 brake assembly on an 85 swing arm modified by adding the round stock piece with the grove to make the brakes work. My 85 caliper was shot so I used the 86 system. The above set up works. You can NOT run an 85 axle with the 86 carrier, but the other way around is no problem.

my bad, just read it again. YOU have the 86 swing arm and brake stay. YOU NEED NOTHING!
