For those of you that do their own powder coating. What do you guys do when you have something that is too big for your powder coating oven (like a trike frame)? Do you send it out or have somebody near by do it?

I have been considering doing my own PC set up but wondered about larger items. I actually thought of making a larger oven myself and just using the elements from an oven(s). I mean how hard could it be to build something new and steal from the donors like insulation & oven walls etc.

Check into the size of an oven used in a pizza shop or bakery. You could stand the oven on the side and maybe hang a frame. Just a thought.

Your right on track....

I have 2 brand new elements from a scratch and dent and an oven I'm currently about to use. My plan is to grab some ductwork large enough to handle a frame, then a piece a few inches larger and insulation between them.

Look on Craigslist for an oven for free for the small stuff. I'm not PC my frame until I can do it. I'm not paying 400$ for 30$ worth of powder.

I have plans in place. I worked on them last night and I am about to embark on the building process. Basic idea is sheet metal, insulation and basic wiring. My plans include windows and lights from used ovens so you can see the progress. It also includes brand new elements because using used ones would need you to get several of the same oven when you can get new for $10 + shipping off Ebay. It will also be able to break down in half so you can do smaller items like handle bars, wheels etc. or larger items like frames and bumpers when put together.

I will let you know how it goes.

WOW. that seems really high. i just got mine back for $150, and they had to clean and bead blast 20+ years of gunk off the frame. oh ya and it was chrome. looks awewsome now. wish i had the space and all the tools to powder coat. hopefully you can get yourself a nice set up.

Hey DC-

I sent my frame, swinger, 5 motor mounts, foot pegs and both skid plates to D&T Powder Coating in Pembroke, MA. 300$ total for two colors (blue and silver).

I should get it back next week. I'll post pics in my thread when there in.

i took 54 pieces in including 2 frames (one my 86 KXT and the other my buddies 85 tri-z) and my snowmobile and three wheeler exhaust which were black ceramic coated, swinger, pegs, motor mounts, engine cases, caliper, hubs, snowmobile suspesion parts, and any pretty much any three wheeler part i needed coated, and my bill was $750 total all prepped and powdercoated. i take my stuff to Quality Coatings, Inc. in mukwonago, wi. they do a great job for a good price. i love bringing them rusty and dirty stuff and getting it back like new. saves me alot of grief. i've done several snowmobile front and rear suspensions with these guys and they hold up great in what i consider some of the roughest conditions when you factor in snow, ice, dirt, and salt.
