Buy the 83 yz250K head gasket. I've said this many times. It's cheaper and is direct replacement. 83 is the ONLY year that works with the tri-z's! It's one piece material, not the multi layer sheet metal tri-z style. It'l save you a few bucks, and in a pinch can sometimes be reused. Plus, it's oem quality, which is in my opinion far superior to any aftermarket gasket.

But with a 3 piece gasket you can take it appart to jump up your compression.

How many people have used a 83' head gasket?

I have used them .. they bond really good with both surfaces...and are a real PITA to clean up after you take the head off..

you loose compression on the 1983 gasket , its .60 thou .thick
the tri-z one is only .40 thick, these are compressed numbers
take out a set of calipers and you will see...

I need that extra clearance, as you can tell ........ the base of the cylinder was so warped, it has to be cut a bunch

Ummmm, looks like you're gonna need more than a different head gasket. You might have to double or tripple up base gaskets to bring up the cylinder to where it's supposed to be. As is, your timings are gonna be way off. And, if the head has been decked, the squish area is gonna need some work.

Jim at JS racing engines did the top end, and said they ported the cylinder after the jug was cut and new sleeve installed. Here is how they cut the head to accommodate for the piston.

I would try a oem one with a half a tube of silver seal in the radaitor to cure weeping up the stud

It was not weeping up the stud, it blew the headgasket, and they resurfaced the head.

Not to sound stupid, but what causes it to weep at the stud. Shouldn't the gasket seal this?

not torque correctly.. not re-torquing after a warm up and complete cool down.

try the Dirtbike gasket,,even if it drops your psi a few ..its cheeper and you might find out if you have a clearance issue with the head.. what was the PSI on it before it blew?

compression was 210 before the engine ever started

i would get another cylinder, your port timing is going to affect how it runs, and its way off with the piston up past the cylinder like that

I spoke with the guy that ported my cylinder, he assured me that the ports have been ported to compensate for the lack of cylinder height. I installed the composite 83 YZ 250 gasket, and warmed it up for 10 minutes. I shut it down, and will let if get completely cold, then re-torque the head and jug. Anyone else have anything to include?

I let it cool overnight. I got home from work today and did a re-torque of the head....wow that was way loose. I let it run for another 10 minutes and shut it down. I'll attempt to tackle jetting tomorrow.
