i completely tore down my 86 tecate motor and had the cases powdercoated and replaced all the bearings and seals. everything went back together pretty good including the tranny. seemed like there was only one way it could go back together. my question is, is there any way to check to see if the tranny is put together right befor i put it back into my tecate? i just don't want to put the bike back together and fill it with fluids just to have something wrong with it. the bike ran fine and shifted fine before i tore it down for the restoration. i did replace the clutch discs too.

does it bench shift?

I would say thats about the best you're gonna be able to get. I know of a few bottom ends that were put together and wouldn't go into certain a gear(s) for whatever reason. I'd say if it worked good before and engages all the gears now, throw it in...

i don't have the shifter on yet. do i need to depress the clutch to shift it on the bench?

If you have the plug out (no compression) i would think you could turn it over with the clutch engaged. You will most likely need the sprocket on it to get enough leverage and you wouldn't want to mess up any splines. It should engage into gear then just wiggle the sprocket backwards (clockwise) and then forward again to get it to pop into the next gear...

thanks. i'll try it out. i have the manual and know i put the right shift forks in the right place. i'm just nervous because this is the first tranny i've done. i've rebuilt plenty of 2-stroke snowmobile motors.
