Just wondering if I plug in a charger to my 250es power outlet will it charge the battery for me. Can this cause any damage?

Thanks

Matt

Well I got tired of spending big money for those worthless small batteries. So I ran new 4 gage cables to the trunk area. I drilled a couple holes into it and put a nice size lawn tractor battery in there. Its easy to get to, easy to charge and replace. Yes, it does take up most of the deep trunk area, but there is still room on top to put basic tools and straps. And you get more of a powerful battery, esp if you use any accessories.

Psh, big money!!! Don't they have a walmart in TN? :D, I pay $30 for my batteries at most, and I have to be honest, the cheap wal-mart batterys are great, Everstart batteries.

When I bought my Big Red it had an extra long cable run out the back for charging purposes. You can see it in this pic. Its the red cable. I still have an original size battery in it and have my whole trunk to use for what ever I want.

I just purchased a battery at Wal-Mart for my SX and it was $49.00 plus a $9.00 core charge plus tax.

I ran a wire (via a stand alone fuse close to the battery) out to the front close to the accessory socket for charging the battery. I've put a piece of rigid plastic on one of the rack brackets, then put the + wire to a bolt through the plastic so the plastic insulates the bolt from the frame. The bolt is mounted 'sticking out', so a standard + battery charger grip sits straight on it, the - to the frame. On my machine the oem socket is dead when the key is off so no battery connection. If I get a chance I'll post a pic later.

I have to say, I have never found a battery that fits (correctly) around town without spending 49$ or so. Even the ones on ebay you are looking around 39-42$ shipped for the cheapest one. The lawn tractor ones are 19$ all day long in most auto stores, plus the extra size gives you the avantage to run more stuff hehe.

I do like Bears idea on the charging system.

Ok, let's see if I can explain...
The grey/red part is rigid plastic. The two bolts to the right of the pic are the mounting bolts, one has the - lead attached. The bolt on the left is the + terminal. It has red tape around it for obvious reasons, also to insulate the bolt head.
Hope that helps!

I just took a gander at the wiring diagram here on the site... Current from that connector would run through the voltage regulator / rectifier. It was a good choice to NOT try charging through that connector...

So basically if I run another positive wire from my battery (about the same gauge as the existing wire that goes to the battery) and insulate it from the frame I can put the positive on that point and the negative on the frame it will charge my battery without ruining anything?

I must make clear that my stator and rectifier were defunkt when I got the machine so that was the original reason for fitting the 'remote charge' point.
However, I can't see it being any different to hooking up the charger direct to the battery.
Any more thoughts? I'm intending to sort the charging on this soon and obviously I don't want to stuff it straight away!

I can tell you a couple things - the right battery is about 50$. Other batteries fit but aren't the right battery - no different than for your car where a cheaper battery fits but isn't right.....

Scotty, has a great fix - it's up to you if you want to eat up most of the trunk.

The other thing - be careful charging that puppie - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!

I didn't use the trickle charge and I left it on for 2 hours and smoke was pouring out of the battery. That was the end of that battery and almost the end of the 250SX.......................
