I need to time my 200x correctly. I took the head off and now it isnt timed right. Can someone help me out. I have the manual but when it says to put piston in TDC i open that little side cover and see T but i dont know what to align it to. Also is the camshaft supposed to have a mark on it to align to something? When I kick the kickstarted down hard, it kicks back up realy hard. Is this a caused by the incorrect timing? I think maybe it trying to fire too early because of timing thats why its shooting back up. Am i right? Please reply. NEED HELP!! :wondering

the little hole you look throgh to see the T has a pointer or groove....line it up with that.
its the middle of the hole
when thats lined up the cam lobes should be down and the cam sprocket should line up(not perfectly) with the groove at the top of the valve cover

I'm having the same problem with my '86 right now but from what I have read the common problem with the 83-85's is that your ignition timing will be off 180 degrees. There is some kind of bolt on the end of the cam that needs to be loosened and rotated 180 degrees if doing what the previous poster suggested still doesn't work. HTH and that you get it going.

i believe, there should be two lines on the cam sprocket on the outside, when its TDC the lines should be in line with the head. loosen up to get chain off and rotate the cam and sprocket 180, making sure the lines line back up. i do not have my manual in front of me, but i think thats how it goes.

Yeah I got it running but it was smoking so bad i was gonna check out the rings to see if they were on wrong or something but when i got all the bolts to the head off, i realized that the head wouldnt come off unless i took the engine out of the frame. I thought i timed it right, but when i kickstart it pops back up real hard and when i get it running, it feels sputtery. Ill try to retime it tommorow.

I'm far from an expert but I think you just need a carb adjustment if it's running. Try messing with your air/fuel screw. Start with 1 1/2 turns out and see if it helps. Back it out a 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time.

no its not the carb because before i took the head off, it ran great besides the smoke. Carb is right. Timing is off.
