Ive got 2 250sx's and working to make 1 outta the 2. One is an 85 and the other is a 87.. Ive found out that the rearends are different and you cant swap parts between the two. My plan was to use the diff. from the 87 in the 85 but the diff., axle, axle tubes, brakes, swingarm are different between the 2. So my question is can i swap out the whole rearend swingarm and all from the 87 to the 85. Or are the frames and swingarm mounting points different?

Thanks Freak

I have 2 85's and by looking at the diagrams of the 87 it appears that the swingarms axle design are different, however it looks to me like the differentials are interchangeable though they are different part numbers so they may indeed be different. That said it also appears that the swingarms are interchangeable too. The swingarm bolt can be a major pain, I've got one that I still haven't gotten off, but another came off fairly easy.
If you can get the bolt off I would say just swap the entire rear end.
Check it out yourself. Here are some diagram links

Both are exactly the same mounting. Be it 85,86 or 87 frame or swinger but the 86/87 brake drum sealing is far superior.... and has a stronger swingarm.

Later year SX's swinger bearings had a built in seal. The aftermarket kit works fine with a seperate bearing and seal - there is truly no benefit to the OEM bearing and seal set up.

Swap everything from the swingarm bearings back; Besides the upgrades the newer swingarm/axle is way easier to work on too.

Hey bud, don't misunderstand me - the diffs are a direct swap - only the ES has a gearing that gives you less topend speed.

The rearend is a direct swap. The swinger bearings swap but 86/87 are diff but no better, just cheaper for Honda........

Also, the 86/87 rear foot lever cable is different and discontinued - I think it's longer - I forget :)
