i am preping my tank for paint when i got it all sanded down i put it on and i put my brand new fenders on. i think the shining surface of the tank looks really good. i was wonding if i could just put a clear coat on it or is the am thing i would have to do to the tank so the clear will dry right
goto a local paint suply store, you need to use a red scotchbrite to scuff the surface good so the clear and adhear well to it. Now for the clear, ask for a cheap 2 part high speed clear, this will most likely come in a quart with hardener....cheap meaning around $40 or so....
read carefully and mix accordenly (most cans have instructions on the side). You wil also need a air supply (air compressor) and a spray gun. The thing about high speed as you dont want to put more then 2 coats on, do the first coat semi dry, or just dust really well, let it dry to its slick to the touch 10-15 mins the aply the second coat wetter then the first and then thats that! let dry for a good day or two, and you should be good.

or, if you dont want to spend the money on teh air guns and such, you can get automotive-grade clear in a bug-bomb can. usually labeled as Cut In Clear. ask any auto paint supply shop, they should have it in stock.
