How many trikes is enough? My wife wants to know...
I saw this advertised and I'm going to look at it tomorrow, but I was hoping you guys would weigh in on it and tell me what you think.
The guy says it's a 225 and has shaft drive. I figured that makes it a 225DX, but he says it "starts on the first pull". Forgive me for my Yamaha ignorance, but I thought these were electric start. He also said it was a 4-speed. If it's a DX, it should be a 5-speed, shouldn't it? The one pic isn't very good, but it looks clean. He's asking $550.
Can you guys identify this machine, and do you think it might be a good deal?
Thanks in advance!

Its either a 225DX or a 225DR..... unsure if they look identical to a dx. A DR has reverse, a DX does not.
they have a pull start back up.. so that probably means the electric start is not working... battery is dead, or starter bad..
$550 is about the going rate for a good DX or DR....with the electric start not working im not sure if it is worth it. Batteries are expensive for it.
thats my opinion.

Yeah it should be a 5 speed. The 225 Dx have both a pull start and a electric starter. On the pic we can see the rear grab bar is bend. Check the rear axle bearing. They don't cost that much to replace but are a little harder to change than on a chain driven trike.

Well, I got a look at it this afternoon. Definitely a 225DX.
Pros:
Starts on the first pull. Engine was cold
No smoke
Runs good
Very clean plastics
Good tires
Pretty clean overall
Good shocks front and rear
Cons:
No battery. Unknown if starter works.
No headlight bulb.
Lost screws for fenders. They were just sitting on the bike.
Pulls to the right pretty hard. Didn't seem to be a tire pressure issue. Nothing visible looking at it, but couldn't figure out what was causing it.
A slight delay before the clutch engages. Seems wrong compared to a Honda, but I'm not sure if it's right or not.
The pull to the right had me most concerned. I was looking for another rider, not another project. Something to complement my 250SX. I didn't even make an offer. The guy talked himself down to $475. I was thinking about offering $400.

Those front forks are known for being rather WEAK! One could be tweked a tad. Just a thought if the tire pressure was equal all around....
make an offer !

$300? Really? I had decided to skip this one, but I might jump on it for that. Since he was asking $550 that seems like a very lowball number to offer. He was a nice kid, I didn't want to offend him.

It's not a big pic, but if you follow a line down from the triples and look at the fender, the front axle looks pushed back an inch or 2.
From your Pros and Cons, that $400 is probably about right. If the forks were good, I'd go more but finding good true straight 225DX forks are getting harder and harder to do.

You might be right. They do look a little bent.

350X in Ny is right, those forks do look bent to me as well, bent back and to one side probably the reason for the pull to the right,, just a thought

I would talk to the guy again, mention the bent forks and try bringing him down to 350-400$.

Well, I snagged it! On Thursday morning, I called and offered him $300, and last night he called back and said it was a deal. Today we went and picked it up, and I spent about an hour riding. I just had to put it away because it's getting dark. Pretty awesome!

Nice, so how bent are they?

Dunno...it's not as obvious as we thought. I'm probably going to have to pull the forks and roll them along my workbench to see. When I test rode it, it was only for a few seconds, I didn't really get a feel for it. After riding for an hour yesterday, the handlebars are turned slightly to the right when the wheel is straight. At first I was excited, thinking it was only the handlebars that were bent, but I don't think they are. So it has to be the forks.
