View Full Version : Could a worn out silencer make it heat?

I've had a heating issue on my esr310 atc for a couple months now and have tried everything I know of except for aftermarket radiators. I really haven't messed with it much here lately though. Well Friday I had a free hour or so on my hands so I decided to repack the silencer- well the old packing was melted and very hard around the core- could this have been causing it to heat? didn't have a chance to play with it to try it out and it may be some time before I do but it has my curiosity up- seems like a possiblity to me?

no, i dont think bad packing would do it. i think the heating issue may have actually made the packing melt together and become hard, as you described.
i think the only way that would happen is in the outlet was somehow plugged, and that would create heating issues.

are you sure your jetting is spot-on? try a richer main and if it doesnt sputter at WOT, your headed in the right direction. richen the mail till you get a WOT sputter, then back it off a jet size.
try a higher grade fuel, or retard your timing a bit?

if this doesnt cure it, then bigger rads may be your only option.

THE stock radiators are more than enoughto cool a 310,, in the right conditions,,, maybe in tight slow riding where you get no airflow , it might not be,,, . i run stock rads on my 500 without issues,,

Is your water pump in good shape?

I have retarded the timing allot at 1 point while I was trouble shooting it. The main is a 185- runs pretty rich- I actually will go down after I fix this issue. checked the water pump seems to be fine, radiators have no corrosion...... I'm running out of things to try...... stumped! It is on the last bore so it will get a little hotter than normal.

well, if the jetting is good, your sure the rads arent clogged, the water pump is good, and its not the timing......

that leaves a higher grade fuel. too low octane will cause heating issues. try a higher grade fuel.
also, what ratio of antifreeze-water are you using? water cools better than antifreeze, you might try a 75/25 ratio of water to antifreeze. a product called ENGINE ICE could also help, its a coolant replacement.
make sure the coolant lines arent plugged.
check and recheck the radiators for inside corrosion/clogging.

also, how do you ride? do you lug the motor alot, or does it get into the powerband frequently? getting it wound up often will keep it cooler.
what oil ratio are you running? maybe you need to mix a tad richer?
what plug are you running? try using a cooler plug than you have currently (higher number=cooler plug)

K- the plugs are br9's gap at 22 with a cr ignition, 110 octane mixed 32:1, I've been running straight water- I have some engine ice but haven't tried it yet and I stay in the power band most of the time. I may take the radiators to a radiator shop because the look really good to me- can see the water circulating when it;s running. Something is wrong somewhere I just haven't found it yet- thank you guys for all of your replies. I'm going to try the stock ignition too just incase there is something wrong with this 1 gettting too hot or something.
