I have searched and read the posts here on frame refinishing. Seems like most come down to 2 camps, powdercoating or spraying. I don't want to use cans myself if I can find another reasonable option, I don't have knowledge to use or access to professional spray equipment. My question is has anyone used a bodyshop to strip and repaint a frame?

What was the cost?

The only place I can find here in the Dallas area to powdercoat a 200M frame, footpegs, and chaincase wants $400 which seems like alot for the size of the job.

If using cans at home, although I don't want to, how should I prep the frame? It does have rust in several spots, and what specific primer, and paint should I use to get it as close to original in appearance as possible. Thanks

Holy sh!t $400:eek: i would just paint it. if its bare metal use the etching primer. using a wire brush on a angle grinder or drill works real nice, and can be picked up at walmart, and so can the paint. just don't be cheap with the paint. i found that the $0.97 paint is no where as good as rustoleum.

The most important step is the first, having frame thouroughly blasted. I use acrylic enamel from a gun with great results.

This is a tough call for someone else to make. It all depends on what you want. Your budget, and your abilities and if you have the right tools, products and time. If you just want to clean things up and dont have much $$ but have time and the tools and ability do it yourself. If you want it to look really nice and last you need to do it right prolly by a pro. Which will cost you $$$.

I wanted really nice. But didnt have the knowledge and the tools to do it right. So I went the powdercoat route by a professional. Cost me 300$.
