I have been wanting to do this for a while so I'll start a thread on it and keep you guys up to date on it as I progress.
I want this to be a small version of my 200X and 350X. Same colors and ride.
Enjoy the start of my hardest project to date.

that looks great,,, before you start mounting fenders,,, you will have to move the tank back,, the triple clamps will hit it, because the neck is shorter,, i think i went back 2 inches,,, i am also not sure that swingarm is going to be strong enough!!!

Thanks for the replies, I will check on the gas tank thing you are talking about Kasey. I am planning on using 200X tripples but not sure at this point.
I will be selling the old swingarm when i'm done with the new one. (hint, hint, hint) Also Yes KASEY, I was thinking about using something a little stiffer than cardboard like,,,,,,,wood or maybe plastic.   (wach the e-mails come in on that one)
I hope to get a few more parts this next week and start on the new swingarm. I hope to run the mock up in September but I'm not holding my breath.

Are you guys using the stock link and swinger? Use the front of swinger and fab from there out and put stock Atc 70 rear brake and drive on a 200x axel?
KASEY

mine is all ATC70 in the rear ,,axle , carrier, bearings and sprocket hub,, i built the swinger from scratch, and used a cr80 front calpier and 250r disc with a cr80 rear master,,,

Kasey,
Are you suing a 200X shock?
I feel bad about not using the foot break. I got all the rearend parts and the rear break uses a left hand break and I think I will just use that for simplisity. I won't lose the mount thought. (I might need it in the future)
I got 1" X 1.5" tubeing today and will be making the Swinger this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing how this works. I am not the best welder so I am going to cut and just tack everything together. Then after it looks like it will work I am going to take it to a local guy that welds for a living. This is not the part of the machine I want to break when I'm roling along at 40+ MPH.

By the way Kasey, I am not going to keep the 1982 gas tank. This is what I found for a good price.
I will be stealing the white tank and blue seat from my avitar three wheeler. I will be painting the frame red and using white fenders. I am working on a printing place to make me some 70X decals for the fenders (just like the 86 200X and 350X). And Blue fork boots.

Awesome. I have a pretty nice 1972 Honda SL70 but there is no way I could do that to it. Those things are worth some bucks and it's a cool bike. I only paid $150 for it at a swap meet and rode it to my truck. I just picked up a 1983 ATC70 that's in pretty decent shape though I can't keep it running I think I have it figured out. I beleive the passage in the carb that feeds the needle and seat is partially clogged and look tough to clean.
I do know a guy with TONS of SL & XL70s I may see if he has a spare or junk frame I can get from him. A suspended ATC70 looks like a great project. Though I do have a suspended 185s that needs to be finished first so the ATC70 would be a long way off.
What front forks and trees are you using for the suspended ATC70?

A lot of people make custom tripples for the 70s and use pit bike forks. Ive been on the hunt for a cheap SL or XL frame and forks for a while now. I personally would use the narrow front tires off these bikes and make it look like the 2nd gen 250R.

This is what I am looking to do. I would like to use a little more narrow tire but, the original SL70 forks are like 4 inches apart. That is a little closer than I want.

If your buddy wants to peel off them frames keep us ALL posted 331. I would think starting with the motor mounts and going back would be the way to go. The chain travel is key to where the rear carrier lines up. Work from the corner out my friend is my only advice. Having a complete image and general direction really helps but it's coming along real nice.

You know, When I started with eying it up I noticed that I needed to have the axel to the right. I didn't think much of it caues I can just put the chain gear on the inside and with a little shimming it would work just fine. (WRONG!!!)

With that being said I did a little work on the front and rear this past weekend.
After moving everything over 1" I foud I should have listend to Vealmonkey. The axel is in the correct spot but NOW the sprocket is off by 1" (atucally 1 1/4" but who cares it won't work). I tried to make a spacer for the sprocket,,,, wrong!!!,,, the thing wobbles, jumps, and just isn't straight.
Screw it, i'm going back to the dead center and buy some of those 1 1'2" wheel wideners.
Enjoy the pics:)

I have been working on the 70X project a little more. I have the chain on and the forks are on and seem to work good. I have been looking at buying the GPX 90cc motor for this one. It has electric start, kick secondary, and a four speed tranny. What do you think?

I would much rather have the slow but workable genuine Honda motor than some POS chinese junk. If I were buying a used machine and I showed up and found it had a chinese motor, I would walk

Well these "junk chinese" engines have been well proved to handle and with stand the tests of times. They are just as dependable as the honda ones with the added ability to have a kicker or E-start. The parts are interchangeable and they work great. So I dont think just cuz its a "chinese" engine, means you should discount the ride.

bigschott, you've gone to all this trouble to build a trick frame, I think you should have some fun with it. A 125 at the very least! If you wanted 90cc, I would have said bolt that into a stock frame and go ride. All the suspension seems like a terrible waste with a 90. You can get the 88cc kit and have a honda engine, but since you're spending some lettuce anyway....

I agree, I wouldnt walk away from a trike cause of a lifan or other motor, I have heard nothing but good about them and actually you are the first person that i have found ANY bad comment on them whipit,do you have any real reason to bash them? have you owned one and blew it up? give us a reason just dont say its a pos and walk away,if i found a trike with a "junk chinese" motor I would prob want it even more, atleast i know its prob 20 years newer!.
Sorry to be off topic, your build looks like its coming along great, keep us posted! I have always wanted a sweet 70.

I have to agree 100% with you on this. I am putting a 110cc motor in my hardtail semi stock frame. I think that would be the max with stock frame but with a suspension, 110 would be the least I would do. heck they have a nice 138cc motor that would rock the house on that awesome beast you are building. But never the less, its a nice project and coming along quite nicely.

Hey, 1st of all thanks for all the feed back. I need this, good or bad, it's the only way I will get this done right. (I hope):welcome: :w00t:
greythorn3, I have checked and the chain does not hit any part of the swingarm or any parts of the machine in full compressed or other. I am changing shocks soon and I will have to put some sort of plastic rail for the chain to glide on like a 200X.
whipit, I have to agree with ScottZJ and 83ATC185S, I have been using a 110cc motor in this little 70 with the white gas tank now for a year. The thing runs out strong, it never fails me. It has electric start and is FAST! I'm not making this to sell and don't think I ever will.
Vealmonkey, After reading your post I thingk your right. I am going through all this to make a 35 MPH 70.:wondering :wondering I will start looking for a 125cc with electric start. The only reason I didn't want to use a 125 is for the manual clutch and the kick start only feature.

Hey greythorn3 thanks for the props. :beer and I do have a 125m motor on the string at this time but I don't I can shoe-horn it into this frame. It would fit but I don't think I can get past the down tubes.:(
scooterroo, Yes those are 200X tripples. If you look at the side view though you will notice that their is a little rake to them. Kasey gave me the heads up on this but untill I ride it I'm not going to worry about it.
For a engine I have found this... It doesn't have a electric start but 140cc could make this ALOT of fun to ride!!!:naughty:

edog, Trust me, I have been watching your build. I love the GPX line up but, the big ones are just a little bit out of my range. ($$$:wondering )
I ordered a rear brake cylinder and I got in my new rear shock. This shock looks GREAT and the tension is perfect (for my 200 pound fat ass  ) I have a bolt (axel) coming for the front and should have a wheel on within the week.
Here are a couple pics of the new shock.

Sorry I havn't posted lately, my wife decided to drive a little close to a dear and destroyed the left headlight, fender, and hood. After replacing all those parts I decided to redo the bumper and right fender. Prime, Paint, Clear coat the car drives and looks like new.
But today I got back to work on the little 70X. I got the wheel on with the spacers and monted the front fender. It needs atleast 2" cut off the front but mounted up nice and looks good. I put on a old 250R headlight just for fun. It looks OK but looks much better than the original 200X headlight. I also put a set of footpegs on from a 250R. It took a little to make them work but, I weight 210 LBS and they handle me just fine.
I need to get a wiring diagram for the 70 though. I am going to be doing some changing to that and need to see how it is all put together. (if you have a diagram PLEASE HELP!)
Enjoy the pics:beer

In this pic. you can see how I need to cut the frame and decrease the rake of the Forks by at least 2 to 3 degrees. and then I will have to trim the front fender also.
You can also tell that the seat will need to be trimmed down. At this height you feel like you are riding on top of the machine.
Rest ashure when I get back to this project you will be the first to know it...
By the way, this is my latest project....

Yes, I bought it from another member for a good price. It made a little bottom end noise and has never been punched out. I posted it on Craisglist a couple times but was never serious about selling it. buster brown is Power coating the frame now and I have been stock piling parts to get this done this winter. I was goin to hit the engine today but,,, we are in the middle of a Blizzard and I can't go anywhere.
I don't want a factory looking machine but just a machine that looks good and runs and rides better.
