Clutch Question?

I hear lots of people talking about replacing parts on clutches on things (atv's dirtbikes,trikes) and I wanted to know what parts get worn out and how are you supposed to tell when you should replace them(ex the plates). The reason why I posted the thread in this forum is because I am going 2 be buying a parts bike just for the clutch and I wanted to know if the plates were good or not by looking at them.

a worn set of plates will show them selfs, Black, Fibers worn down to the metal, the Metal plates worn out, i measure the clutch stack, theres specs in the manual, the basket worn right out will have big groves on it, least dirt bikes,
