I was out on my 86 250 ES Honda cruising along and started to smell oil burning. I stopped and noticed that the top front area of the engine was covered in oil and it was getting on the exhaust pipe. I get it home and start looking for the leak and it seems like it was coming from the valve cover cap. I took it off and the o ring looked good so I put a small bead of permatex on it and put it back on. I cleaned it off and took it for a run and it was still leaking. I then got serious and took the tank off and noticed a rubber line sticking down by the frame that had oil seeping out of. I traced it back to the rear end. It was the vent line coming from the rear end and it had gear oil coming out and causing my problems. I had just changed the rear end grease and I did not over fill it. Why would this happen. I blew the line out with air with the cap off and put a vent valve on the end and ran it for an hour and no more leaks. I had the oil level in the rear end level with the fill hole. The manual call for something like 3.3 OZ of 80W hypoid grease which is what I used. I'm just glad it wasn't the head leaking oil.
