I am not sure if i should try and fix this up or just part it out. The top end has been off with alot of rain getting in the lower end. It isnt froze but i would consider it junk. The plastics are shot but everything else looks pretty solid. I will not restore it but will consider getting it rideable.

What other motor will fit?? YZ???? What years?

What is the market for parts if i decide to part out??? Which parts bring bucks?? I want to make sure those are useable.

I would keep it if you had another tri-z for parts, but in that shape I think it would be a idea to part it out. rear fenders seem to be okay are they faded? bottom end looks to be okay, you could probably make $100-$150 on it. is that the stock silencer? I would give you $30-$40 for the silencer in that shape. if you where to part out and do it right you could make around $500-700.

I hate to say this because I have honestly fixed up worse than that. Unless you can find a decent motor for a decent price, I would part it. You will have a ton of money into it, when you can buy running Tri-Z's for around a grand. It will nickel and dime you to death. Or keep it and see if you can find another, and make a good one out of the two.:beer

don't get me wrong it looks like it just needs a good motor, but I would check bearings, forks for cracks, frame for cracks, swing arms are prone for cracks I would deffinnetly(spelling) check that.

all that looks fairly well. I have always wanted a Z but right now i am not looking to start project. \

A little history on the bike. It was bought new in 85. In 1986 the owner died. all of his belongings were stored at his parents. his brother got it in 2002. he painted it camo and used it at the deer lease. In 2005 it was given to a cousin who did not know to mix the oil. Fried the top end and had it in his backyard ever since. I picked it up 6 months agofor $100.

before i part any thing onthe motor i want to make sure it is still good. i pulled the top end when i got it and before i stored it outside i completly filled the lower in with oil and wrapped it in a bag. the bag had came off and the lower end is now filled with a water oil mix. i have it drained right nowto see how much water was in it. It turns really free. so i am hoping all is good

i believe it has been done. as a matter and fact i believe the bottom end bolts to the tri z motor mounts with no mods, as the bottom ends are similar (minus the water pump). im thinkin the real issues are bolting the head and getting the exhaust flange to clear the downtube.
dont take that to the bank though, i could be completely wrong. try a search there should be a post.

some one here in oregon made a yz490 trail Z and it was great, idk if he is on the board but he said he went here. also, he said there was a problem lining up the front and rear sprocket, it was off by a 1/4 of an inch or something like that.

Their mice "(computer) They apply to the term armchair racer.

Berry, it all depends on how much you want to spend. If the bearings, breaks, and everything else is in good shape, Id rebuild that motor to have a fun runner.

Used plastics can be found cheap (even from me maybe if you decide)

But as stated up above, a decent used RUNNING Z is around a grand. It all depends on how much it needs, and how far you want to go.

will a 490 fit?

I had a TRI-Z with a YZ465 motor, it was gay and slow. It had an extended swing arm and still got smoked by my cousins modded 426EX. I sold it on ebay for less than $500 and it was in good shape.

And I vote fix the TRI-Z in this thread. Just buy a motor on here or ebay. If I was close to you I would buy it from you and fix it.

Fix it if you can find another Z.
