i have a honda 90 atc that is from about 1978 its leaking oil around the cam chain area of the head.. also have a leaky petcock too.. i was wondering if that was a common problem with the head and if it would be ok just to smear some silicon around the area, as i noticed when i cleaned it off there was some already there..
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.. i hate to tear it down right now..

it doesnt leak like pressure is forcing it out, it just drips

Was it over filled with oil or riden hard? Some times they seep a little when it gets hot.. As long as its not dripping I would try to seal it. If it persists, get a gasket kit and replace what you can when you take it a part. How does it run other wise? I like those engines, they last forever. BEETs

it runs pretty good, smokes a little.. it is dripping when its running.:( . its not over filled with oil, I really dont want to tear it down.. i got it standing up and dried off and wire brused now, so maybe i will throw some silicone gasket maker on it and see what happens..

Use a high temp silicone (red). As long as it doesn't run out of oil while riding and doesn't lose oil press, have fun.

i dont ride it much, just use it around myhouse maybe 10 minutes at a time, i guess i will silicon it now and then replace the gaskets next summer, maybe even re-ring it! :) thanks for the help.. any ideas on them petcocks? alsou know a good place to get a full gasket kit? including the carb/petcock gaskets?

Be careful when taking(petcock) apart. Might have to reuse old gaskets. I've reconditioned old ones by rubbing silicone on it. Let it dry on a peice of very lightly oiled glass and lite pressure.(trim to size). I like to take steelwool and smooth the backside of lever to keep it from sticking when turning on /off..Maybe someone else knows where to get new gaskets. Good luck...

wow, what mickey mouse job! hope it works though. the arrow in the picture is pointing to the choke. it should turn a quarter turn, one way to turn it on, and the other to turn it off. hth

the choke is the lever behind that.. unless there is 2 chokes?

That RTV silicone wont last long.
Where the leak is coming from,Is your headgasket.
Either the gasket has failed,or the bolt that tightens that area down has snapped due to age.The only right way to fix this is replace the headgasket.
Get a manual and do it right,or it will cost you more in the long run with these"band-aid repairs"
The knob that is missing on the carb, was just a dust cover for your choke linkage. That wont affect anything.I have seen quite a few that have fallen off.
Edit........Swigin is right, that is the hi altitude knob.It pulls out for high altitude areas.I never needed to use mine.
Fix the oil leak, save the trike!

the choke lever is behind that knob.....on my 78 90 that was a high altitude knob.
no idea how it works....must be like a hot start button

i believe the leaks is from a gasket arouns the cam chain hole between the head and the cylinder.. its will be fixed right next summer.. this is just to get it around the yard for now.. not an endurance race.

well i bought it yesterday from a guy that said it hadent been run or started in at least 5 years... so i guess sitting that long is minor, but it did have silicon in them spots before i cleaned it off and re applied..

Number 5 is not leaking or the head gasket.. It is the long O ring on the head stud dowel next to number 5. That head stud feeds oil to the head and is under pressure. Make sure you replace it with the correct part and that will fix your problem.

Pretty much all my mates who have air cooled four stroke powered bikes have some sort of oil oozing out of some place or another on the engine. I assume from this that its not much of a problem. I notice theres some coming from my decomp lever and around the top of the head like yours but I never see it oozing out i just see it there when I look at it.
