Hey, got this 200x yesterday and it ran great. It started to take longer and harder to start so I took the carb off and cleaned it (what little there was in it.) Ran good but started to do the same thing. Adjusted a few things and started easier, but now I'm back in the same boat. I does have an in-line filter. I know carb is clean no problems in fuel lines, and filter is clean. It will run good and strong until warm and start to run bad (loss of power, throttle response.) I has spark (blue) and a new spark plug. After kicking a few mins on choke the plug isn't wet. What's wrong with the trike? It's a 1984 200x. Does it have an in-the-tank screen that could be plugged? Any help is appreciated!

Take the petcock off your tank and inspect it for build up, and then blow thru it with an air compressor to make sure the passages are clear. If that doesnt help then buy a carb rebuild kit. Ive said it a million times before but a carb kit is probably the best 20$ you can spend on an old machine.

Oh, and :pics:

Let me run out and get some pics, it NEEDS A NEW CLUTCH CABLE!!! :D

If you think you may have possible fuel problems, you should shut try to the fuel off the instant it acts up, then drain the fuel bowl with the little phillips screwdriver and that will let you know if it is some type of fuel delivery problem - like an obstruction in the tank or a problem with the tank cap that prevents it from venting. Very little fuel will drain out if it isn't getting into the bowl somehow.

When you cleaned the carb, did you remove and unscrew every jet and soak them in carb cleaner??

I'll be the first to admit that many years ago I felt cleaning a carb thoroughly was an outside wash and squirting carb cleaner into the fuel bowl area....

After the pics I pulled the cable again and it snapped! (Sorry hard too see, it was holding by 3 of the strings)

Yeah I took everything apart and sprayed carb cleaner through ever opening I could locate. Took the secondary jet out (can't remember the right name) and cleaned it even though it was already clean...

Im just gonna throw this out there but its possible that the throttle cable was your problem. Maybe each time you pressed it, the cable stretched a little more and didnt open up the carb as much each time??

Pull the gas line off of the carb and open the petcock and see if gas flows unrestricted.

Blow through the fuel cap vent to see if it is clear

Does it smoke at all when it runs?

Once its running will it STAY running? or does it just die?

Is it only hard to sttart when warm? Does it get harder to start when warmer?

My dad's 85 200x was extremely difficult to start when warm... and the kicker slipped a little sso it SUCKED. I walked home a few times and got my 200s to pull it home lol....

to fix it I put in a new spark plug... DONT LAUGH but I used a Champion plug and it actually ran alot better than the new NGK plug..... dont ask me....

Also, we got a carb kit for it.... that made a HUGE difference in starting it.... also tapping on the carb with a rock or somethign hard always helped it out before the carb kit.... the float valve or needle seat must have been sticking....

Yeah it's EXTREMELY hard to start when warm. Still gets spark though. It doesn't smoke and has TONS of compresion. I've now pushed it an 1/8 mile twice up a hill... NOT FUN! I'll go check it out and do what you guys say... HA! looked at the bottom of my right foot where the kicker was on my shoe and it's bruised :(

Tighten that chain up before you brake that sprocket cover.

Tighten that chain up before you brake that sprocket cover.

Ok, will do.

Got it running! (But not moving) Recleaned the carb (and didn't find anything) and according to a honda manual I have kicking around, adjusted the carb settings. Starts easy and revs fast and strong! Still idles a little fast but I'll adjust that after riding/warm up! Thanks guys!

Runs poorly once warm, won't start once warm? Sounds like a valve adjustment issue to me. Possibly a tight exhaust valve?

Buy yourself a $20 carb kit and you will be amazed....

If cleaning up your carb helped it that much then think of what new components will do for it....

The best $20 you can invest in a trike.... and an air filter lol...

If the plug is dry when it won't start it's a fuel delivery problem. Either a clogged up pilot jet, petcock not flowing, needle valve not working right or a clogged gas cap vent. What you describe above sounds the most like a clogged gas cap vent to me. When that happens it will do exactly what you're talking about.

Oh darn! Was riding it and saw that the head gasket is blown :( Well it's time for the parts anyhoo. Anyone know how much a head gasket, valve seats and guides, and kickstarter/shifter seals run?

Ok now have it back together and it will not idle. I only have the header on it and she's loud. Feels like the pilot isn't working fully, as the bottem end is really bad. Since it's and overbore and different piston do I need to re-jet? It will start but only after a lot of kicking and on-off throttle. Has to idle at 1/4 throttle to even stay running. I've got the pilot turned out like 5 turns (I know this is like 3 1/2 to much) Need help! Doesn't get real hot, and pulls really hard!

Did you rebuild the carb as mentioned several times? At least check the flow from the tank to the carb inlet so you can rule out starvation.

Didn't rebuilt it, because everything inside appears to be new. It getting gas, as I checked everything and it's good. If I choke it the plug gets damp.

Could I need a bigger pilot?

Yes, or one that isn't plugged. Your low speed circuit definitely isn't functioning it sounds like.
