Ok so here is my problem i just wanted to get a few more opinoins on. I just got a 87 t4 and every time i try and start it, it wants to kick back and backfire. It kicks back so badly that if i dont move my foot off of it before i finish the kick it brakes the kicker right off. I can get it started and have it running, but if i raise the rpms much it pops and backfires and stalls. it seems to me like i have a timing issue, but im not sure where. Is it the stator or flywheel? or could it be the cdi? any ideas will be helpful thanks guys.

sounds like a sheared flywheel key. fix it before it starts to run backwards on ya. easy fix. pull the stator cover and flywheel, check the groove in the Flywheel and crank closely, if the new key is loose it will shear again. HH

You may have gotten one of the bad flywheels. (or the key could be sheared like Harry said) The magnets on some were glued in wrong. They are off just enough to screw things up. I had one that you could actually kickstart but it would sometimes just fire up BACKWARDS and RUN that way. I would inspect it and if you see no wear/shear on the key or keyway, buy a new Ricky Stator flywheel and that should fix it. Got any pics of your T4? I for one would like to see it.

yep, its timing. have you messed with the flywheel and stator at all. cdi wouldnt have anything to do with the timing. your either advanced or retarded a few degrees. pull your flywheel and check your stator plate, maybe your screws that hold it in place could of loosened up and it moved just a bit, them rebounding kickers can be very bad on the bottom of the foot, i know!!!! also like already said, check the flywheel key to make sure it hasnt broken off. and just a tip....next time quad issues are posted in quad central.

Good looking T4. You got some mint looking plastics. Amazing to see rears without the typical FMF Burn hole. How long have you had it and have you been over at www.kawieriders.com to show it off or get info? Its a good site for T4 owners. LOTS of em there. I see you don't have any sidepanels (or just not on it right now). There is a guy over @ kawieriders who makes them. Black, white, green and blue are the colors he offers I believe. Good luck with the flywheel issue and hope to see more of your T4. Sweet.

thanks for all the help again guys, i bought this quad in late june right after trikefest i found it just a few miles from home and i couldnt say no. im really a honda man, the only kawis ive owned have been jetskis really. i have a set of original side panels i have to put on it, but ive been working on her since i brought it home, finding parts is tougher then i expected. i joined kawi riders a few weeks ago and just posted on there too it seems to be just like was said here stator plate adjustment or flywheel key. so ill tear into it next free chance i get and let you guys know what happens. so long as i get her running and riding nice this t4 will be at tf 09! Thanks again everyone ill talk to you later
