View Full Version : ATC Recoil Starter interchangability

I scored a free 82 ATC 200 recently. Electric starter works, but the recoil assy is missing. I got an 84 model off of e-bay assuming they would interchange, but the catch on the flywheel and the 84 recoil don't line up. I've seen 4-bolt catch that looks like it will work, but mine has a 3 bolt pattern.
Is there a 3-bolt with the larger diameter, or do I need to get another recoil assy or flywheel?
Anybody got a starter solenoid/seat/tank they wanna sell?

1st off, welcome to 3WW. We hope you enjoy it!
2nd, For Sale or Wanted ( atv related ) postings go in the classified forum only.
3rd, Seeing as you need a pull starter and a starter solenoid, this tells me you don't have a standard atc200, but you probbably have a 82 ATC200e ( Big Red ). You can check via the model tag and / or via the vin number on the steering neck. On stock 1982 Honda's the only the ATC that had electric start was the Big Red's. ;)
If my assumtions are correct then this would explain pull starter fitting issues. The Big Reds used a different style pull starter than standard 200's. Once we know for sure what you have then someone here will be able to help you with correct information.

The 185s pullstart will fit on there.

Thanks, Howdy.
I'm familiar with the forums, and have been watching the classifieds.
Big Red would be correnct based on what you're telling me, the recoil assy that i've got is off an 84 and it'll physically bolt up to the motor, but the catch that's bolted to the flywheel is too small of a diameter to work with my newly acquired recoil.
I realize that a 185 will fit, but is there another catch with three bolts and the larger dia? or do I need to just sell this recoil and get the right one/swap the flywheel and catch?

I've noticed the motors with electric start have smaller cages than the recoil-only motors. Not sure if they are interchangeable.
Yours is probably like this?

And the '84 recoil you bought works with a cage like this?

#14 in this diagram is what i'm talking about.
The one shown looks like this one:

Mine looks like that, except it has 3 bolts, not 4. And from the diagram, I can't tell what exactly it's bolting to. (haven't torn into it yet)
