Whats a good Trail/Track bike?

Hey guys, since its dirtbike heaven up around my area with 4 full tracks pissing distance from me, im looking to get a dirtbike to keep my shape/stamina up.

Probably will keep it around stock as it will just be to odd trail ride but more track than anything.

I was leaning towards a 2 stroke, probably a cr250 late 90's or early 00's. Any ideas or thoughts would help great here, looking to spend around 1-2g.

well i would go with either a yz250 or cr250 or a rm250, there all great bikes, and you can pick them up for around 1200$ for one in great condition. and remember the newer the better

if you can find one get a 93-96 cr250 or a 91-99 kx500 both awesoem bike the 500is a bit to be desiredon handling but willdefinitly keep you on your toes.

i would go with a 2000 or newer CR.
can be had cheap, and they haul ass, and are easy to work on.

For trails I would just get an XR or XL 200/250/400 as they have decent power and are reliable. The CR looses to the XR/XL on reliability.

yes, but these would be worthless on a track. and the cr is rock solid reliable, it just might need rings a little more often than the XR.

Yeah a 2000 CR in great shape...meaning needs nothing, gonna soak up every bit of 2gs. The thing is you can find em with all the goodies on the bike. Skid plates, barkbusters, protapers, pipes and maybe a Scotts stablizer or a big tank. I have a 426 YZf and I think it rocks on both trail and track. You need to be careful do to the time on the motor. All the 1999 and early 2000 models are due for topends now...even if they claim low hrs. I'm just know thinking of doing mine in the coming yr. Mine is a 01' with what I'd consider perfect maintance regiment. I can just feel the motors lost just a bit of compression. I do have a friend with a steel frame CR thats been gone over from end to end. I think total with front and rear suspension all the bearings, new clutch, cables, tires and grips *note motor was already new at purchase and bars were new. He was just under the 2G mark;but the bike feels tight like new. The Newer frame might moto better but remember that steel frame bike is close to Bommer class status and won in its day.

shop around. you can find this stuff extremely cheap, hell i got mine for 800 bucks, and has needed front pads and fork seals, so i have about 860 in it. it needs the chain idler wheel, which is 30, so lets just say i got it for 900. , top and bottom end just done before i got it, new plastics, new seat cover, and new tires all around.

If you go with a cr, do not get one with a RC Valve. Stick with the HPP. A much more reliable and rugged system. It's based off of actual rpm, not throttle opening, ignition advance, and other parameters that has to be processed and finally sent to the servo to open valve. It all takes time, and thats IF the cables are even adjusted properly. It's hard to beat yz's and rm's. Doesnt have to be the newest either. I've had and still own new and old bikes. They really havent changed all that much, other than of course the modern 4 strokes. Find the cleanest and best kept example you can, and go with it. Prolly a 250, and never a 500. Difficult to track ride, and easier to get hurt on. Bigger isn't always better.

I agree with ed.Have a YZ250 2005 and it is great to race and trail ride.A couple of my buddies have CRs with the RC valve in them and they have had nothing but problems with them.

Don't forget about the CRF450.

heavy and expensive.......my buddy is a 4 stroke fanatic, riding a 450x. after riding my CR a few times, hes going to be switching to a 2 stroke in the near future. lighter, just as fast, and that extra 30 pounds is a massive difference when ripping around a track.

Either get a 250f Or the 250 two-stroke. A 450f is almost to much for most people on a track. My buddy has the 03 cr 250 that he picked up for 2 grand and it came with all the goodies. Bike runs awsome im very impressed with it. Def weighs less than my crf but power wise my bike is much better but if i was to go back and decide between a cr 250 or crf450 id pro go with the cr because of the lighter feel on a track and even in the trails.

a 250 2 and 450 four produce close to the same power, but the 250 2 is way easier to maintain. and a 250f doesnt even compare . its all about the rider, if you like to go fast, skip the 250f entirely. ive ridden a few 450's, and they dont impress me one bit. i prefer my lil ol two fiddy.
