I am in the market for a 250r.
Which bike is better, they look the same, but I hear they have different carburetors that make a huge difference. A little help please:rolleyes:
I see plenty of 85's for sale, but rarely a 86 250r.
Dammit!

Depends on which one the person you're asking owns.
I've seen people say the 85 has more power but nowhere has there ever been numbers to prove that. I think it's BS personally. They have different carbs and the power comes on a little different (the 85 has more of hit where the 86 rolls on a little smoother and revs out better) but I think the actual amount of power you're getting is the same. The motors don't have any signifigant differences. The 85 had very slightly taller tires (more or less the same tire but it was rounder where as the 86 tire had a very flat profile).
The 86 has a slight amount more rake built into the frame so it handles a little better at high speed.
I'd suggest getting whichever you find the best deal on. Nothing is stock anymore usually so comparing the small details of their stock traits is pointless.

Nice bikes! Let me re-phrase that.
VERY NICE BIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope to post mine soon. Going to go look at a 86 tomorrow. Guy is the original owner, stored it for the past 10 years. All stock.
Been finding lots of bikes for the same price, but all have been torn into or had major motor work done to them. Don't think I could get much better than a bike with little wear and a gunked up carb./ tank. That's easy.:naughty:

86 Rs also had the progressive fork springs in them, the axle and carrier that swap with the quad, and lets not forget the cooler looking headlight shell, inch thicker seat foam and the cool looking gunmetal paint on the engine and calipers.

I beg to differ on the headlight. 85 looks cooler and is more functional.:D

It's smaller and if memory serves me 10 watts dimmer. How is that more functional?

I ride my 86 in 110+ degree deserts. Trust me cooling is not an issue.
The only real benefit there is to the 85 light is you have the option of a Maier shell instead of OEM. There is no aftermarket shell available for the 86 at this time.

I know this. I am just spliting hairs. You can look at it and see that it channels more air. Does it really make that big of a difference?NO
On that note of the 86 Maier. I am glad I have a couple 86's and 85's NOS headlight bezels.:D

Okay, so this is what I got. Never had one before. Ridden them, but never owned. Any suggestions, advice, or input would be greatly appreciated. It has been stored for 10yrs. Need to clean out the carb and cob webs. But it's from the Original owner, and the pic's are before I could even clean it up.
Next weeks project:w00t:

come on, let's hear it. I want your comments on it. Penny for your thoughts!
Very nice!
Love the pipe!!
looks like it was put in a time capsule.
Looks to be all there.
Dammit!

I don't know what pipe that is but I want it. If you decide you don't like the power delivery once you spend some time with it let me know. I have different pipes available. Might be able to work out a trade or something. Edit: looks like a Selvys. Those things are coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden.
Looks like the tank was painted? Scrape that crap off and restore it (http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=87803&page=2&highlight=project).
Looks like an exceptionally clean trike though. Great score.

86 FTW!!! Had both years, personally prefer the look of the 86. But that looks like a great start, I wish my 86 woulda been that clean when I got it. Im starting all over from the ground up, frame is at the sand blaster right now:twisted:

haha
purposely did not say anything about the pipe. The guy I bought it off of claimed to be an old racer. By the looks of his garage, I would believe it. Plus the bike was in Yorba Linda, John Force's home town. Lots of racers out there. He mentioned the pipe was a custom made pipe for the bike specifically. He said the name, but could not remember. But I agree, the tank appears to either have been replaced at one point, or the opposite, all the plastics except the tank where replaced. Over all, can't wait to get into it. Couldn't tell you about the power band until I get it in the dunes, where I could really play with it. Planning on a trip soon.
But I loved the pipes fabrication. All the pieces where installed in I guess you would call a linear fashion, horizontal to the pipe. If that makes sense.
Next weekend I will take more dtailed pic's if you guys would like.
Overall, I am estatic. Felt it was a decent price too. $1500
the guy even had the original "pink slip" that is actually pink!
plus he threw in a set of paddles

Nice score Autodoctor. $1500 isn't bad at all for such a nice base to build on.

The 86 stock fork springs are NOT progressive, merely single piece vs. the two piece setup in the 85s. I am running aftermarket progressives in my 86 and the two look NOTHING alike.

juste une ti-blague, cause they'd be pretty rare in the states
I recall it was released in Canada only in 87 - I remember drooling over the brochure and that they used white fenders but other than that it was pretty much an '86. The magazines at the time were jealous, and I think 3wheeling had an article on it...

Hmm, didn't see this post back in Oct. Well allow me to retort. The 86 springs ARE in fact progressively wound verses a straight wound main spring in the 85 with a smaller spring with a different rate so the forks act progressively. I also have a set of Progressive Suspension fork springs for my 86 and I know they don't look alike because they are far more progressive than the stock 86 springs. That doesn't mean that the 86 springs are "NOT" progressive though.
