ok people. i have an 84 250r that wheni shift it into 2nd gear it will go in until i put some power on and then it kicks out. also it doesn't like to shift into anything but 1st gear.
i am thinking it is my shift drum and maybe the selector springs let me know what you guys think. i would ike to get this running properly so i can ice race it this winter.
thanks

Kicking out of gear is a bad sign your dogs are worn back, and the webs on the mating gear are worn the same. in other words, you no longer have straight surfaces to 'hold'. This popping out causes terrible strain on the forks and drum valleys that forks follow. If the gears are not broken or chipped they can be re-cut by MRE in Florida. The forks will need to be replaced if damaged along with drum. It's a common problem with all old trannys that have been used and abused for 25 years or so, and many careless riders over the years.

Does Your Trike Have A Shift Lever Tensioner Nut Or Bolt? If It Does May You Can Adjust It Up To Keep In Gear Better I Do It With Older Worn Out Trikes It Works Sometimes>>

Sounds like Ed hit the nail on the head. Look for a good complete used tranny assembly or bottom end and install it over the winter preferably an 81-82 those engines took less abuse because their more tuned down.

that is what i kind of thought. i got some of the parts already like the drum and the forks plus some of the little parts. now i need to look for the shafts and gears.
man i am going to hate splitting the cases again to do this. so here is the question, i just installed new piston with new rings, they only have about 5 hours total on them, do you guys think i should get new rings?
