This what i do with my 110. What I do is round piece that the rope goes in, put that in a vise then put hook up the end of the spring and the round piece then wound it down until it'll fit into the case. Unhook the spring the round piece and put it into the case and connect the top in the case. Then put the round piece in. And your done.

I just hold it with my fingers.

yeah, but ive gotten hurt very badly when the spring came off the round thing.... and it cut my face pretty bad.... the safest way, and easiest for me is to lay the large piece that covers the whole assembly down on a flat surface. take the spring and hook it on the little knob inside the case, then turn the case so that the spring rolls nicely into spot. make sure that you have a couple fingers in place to hold it down so it doesn't fly apart... you will get it.... if it comes loose, just get everything out of the way, and try again... then wind the string on the metal plate, and stick it over the spring. there should be little slots in the plate, so you can mover the spring around with a stick to get it into place... then wind it up 4-5 times, send the string throught the whole, put on the rubber handle, then do the loop knot deal on the metal piece. the only thing i encounter is putting the spring on backwards D'oH!! lol :x :-P good luck!! :-D 8)

I remember the first couple that I did. I thied the wrpping it and then sticking it in, I tried taping it and sticking it in and probably 30 other ways. I did try this one way and it works great.
Take the cover and set it on the floor, then hook the outer loop'd end of the spring on the cover where it goes. Hold the hooked end there ( left hand ) and use the right hand and wrap the spring around 1/2 way slowly. Once you get the spring in 1/2 way around hold it there with your right hand. Then move the left hand around a little ( 1/3 of the way ) and and then hold it there ( with your left hand ). Take the right hand and work more of the spring into the cover. Move your left hand around a little more and hold it, then the right hand some more and hold it. Work the spring in slowly. Be sure to hold the spring you have in there firmly. If you don't it will come back out.
When I do this I rotate the pull starter housing as I am working the spring in. This keeps me from having to spin around the pull starter.
I have used this way of doing it for 10 years. After rebuilding 100's of pull starters I can install a spring in 1-2 minutes every time. I have showed 15-20 other people the trick. It must work good for other people, I say that because everyone I showed uses this way to install them.
I hope this Helps.

Howdy's Way is the way to go I have done this many times (I'm sure not as many times as Howdy) Probably atleast 30 to 40 times in the past 20+ years. Once you do it a couple of times its no problem.

Keep in mind the first garage I worked in at home had a dirt floor and one light. I put a nail in the work bench and wind it as tight as I can and then put plastic cable ties around the spring to hold it. Then put it in the case and cut the ties off. First time I ever did it I wound the spring backwards. The neighbors learned some new words that night!
