I just rebuilt my honda 185s and it smokes like crazy!..also spits oil out of the exhaust port...I replaced the vavles, piston, rings, and top end gaskets. What would cause oil to come out the exhaust? Thanks in advance guys.

did you have it bored? did you stagger the ring groves? install the dowel pins in the jug/head?

The only engine I had that spit oil out of the exhaust was 200e, and it did that because the piston and rings were out of a different engine, but it still had very good compression.

hmmm, i'll have to check the book and see how many dowell pins there are supposed to be, I bought the piston and cylinder together (someone else had it bored and honed). Aside from those things, when i took the engine apart tonight i saw that the little rubber ball thing behind the cam bearing/bushing was covered and filled with liquid gasket. I cleaned it out and put the whole engine back together. hope this works. Thanks for your unput guys

Okay so I took it apart cleaned up some stuff and put it back together, didn't help. I did stagger the rings and I believe that I had all of the locating dowels in. I started it up and it smoked like a chimney, pulled the plug and it was oil fouled. I purchased the jug and piston/rings as a set off of ebay, some guy had it bored and honed to fit the piston. I just don't know if he had it professionally done, i mean its cross hatched nicely still with no scoring. Is there ANY other reason oil would dump into my cylinder? Thanks again for the previous answers

You could have damaged the oil ring putting it in because thats where your gonna get you leakage. If that oil ring is the right one and in good shape you should have no oil to burn off.

it seemed alright (bottom most rings, correct?) but i do have a brand spankin new ring set that I could try, so i will do that. Thanks!

after reviewing the wiseco ring install instructions...i may have overlapped the oil ring expander. that would do it, wouldn't have thought about with your guy's help, thanks again

What about the valve guides/seals?

i replaced those when i rebuilt it, and hopefully i did that right. just pushed the new seals into place where the old ones were, seems pretty tight around the valves. After tearing the engine down AGAIN I found that the oil seal ring is broken at the very end, i'll put in a new one and cross my fingers. Also I had mentioned that the little rubber ball behind the cam was covered with liquid gasket, after removing that the cam got oil again. Thanks for all your input guys!

i don't think the ring in there is even the right one, i have a new piston and ring set to compare it to...*Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edit ed**Edited* (guy who sold me the set)

check the ring gap by, removing the rings and slide them in the cylinder, then check the gap with a feeler gage

that rubber ball thing NEEDS to be in the head.

it plugs that hole so oil goes where its needed

I reinstalled the piston with a brand new ring set that came with the same model piston that i have in now. The oil seal was totally different from the one that I was using. Yup i got the rubber ball in, it was just clogged up before around the ball. I'm almost done putting the engine back together and i really don't feel like pulling it apart to check ring gap, but i suppose i should have done that before i installed the rings. i'll let y'all know how it goes when i finish it up tom. Thanks alot to everyone for their input and help!
