View Full Version : 350x burns ALOT of oil...

I picked up a 350x motor yesterday, installed it today. I was told it had been recently rebuilt. Got it running and it smokes so bad. I think it burns more oil than fuel. The weird thing is it seems to have a ton of compression. It is almost impossible to kick over. It started right up and seemed to run fine.

I am thinking valve seals/guides or maybe the oil control rings?

Could the cam timing be off a ways making it so hard to kick?

I would do a compression test first. If you are testing good then, I would pull the carb and exhaust off and look in the intake and exhaust ports for any kind of oil on the valve stems. I don't think cam timing would make it harder to kick itself, just harder to start. If you say it runs fine it probally is a bad valve seal.

Don't know a lot about the 350X but maybe your gas/oil mix is too strong. I ride only 4 strokes and have accidentally put mix gas in and it smoked really bad. So if it's a 4 stroke, then maybe bad gas or Mix gas?

your decomprsion lever might not be hucked up. thats y it might be hard to start and they could of just ben pulling your leg and sold you a junker happen to me before.or they could of put all the rings lined up. i had a 86 motor it smoke like a freakin train and the rings wasnt bad the valve guid seal were only half of them was on.

A 350X is a 4 stroke engine

I had a 200 that smoked realy bad because the rings where out of a different 200 engine, but it still had good compresion. It could have been taken a part and the rings not put back exactly where they originaly were, I knew a guy that had that happen to his quad. He took it a part and he didn't line the groove in the cylinder up with the mark on the ring.

id say its the valve seals man, either that or scored valve stems. i got a little suzuki quad that smokes crazy! it has normal compression and power though, so it has to be valve seals or scored stems because thats the only way for oil to get into the chamber besides the rings, however if it were the rings, there would be loss of power and compression. its not hard to replace valve seals if you got to

you didnt accidently put two-stroke fuel in it did ya?

Running 2-stroke mix in a 4-stroke doesnt make it smoke. I do it sometimes if i run out and dont feel like going to the gas station. All i notice is the exhaust smells like 2-stroke,..thats it.

If the compression rings are good but the oil ring bad it will have good compression but smoke and I'm sure that's the problem. Seen it many times. Put rings in it and move on.

Getting ready to tear into my 300sx to figure out the same thing. My money is on the oil ring.
Of course it could be the paper and matches you put in the gas tank I bet!
Some people are better listeners than talkers, only problem is they talk too much to hear anything!

you mean oil rings? And what do you mean by the rest of it??

I pulled the head and the cylinder off. Both top oil rings had the gap in the same spot, not 120 degrees from each other like it is supposed to be.

Put it all back together after I put the rings on the right way, the hone and piston looks brand new. Started it back up and it is exactly the same. I did look to make sure it had valve guide seals and it did, but now that I am looking online they did NOT look the same.

Is is also a wiseco 10.2 comp piston.

Put new rings in it. And technically there is only 1 oil ring it is just 3 pieces. Sucks you did all that work and didn't put a $30 set of rings in it which would have fixed your problem.
