I have a crank case gasket leak!

Trike made 'an effort' when kicking over today then just didn't make any more effort after - pulled the plug and it was wet and black. No spark- Plug is dead.

Put in a new plug and it fired first kick.

Looking at pics of plugs in different stages (rich to lean) my plug for sure looks to be rich/oil fouled. I only mix 45 and 50 to 1 in my gas - so, I probably have a crank case gasket leak causeing tranny oil to get up into the head? Maybe?

It's colder here now so I woulda figured the bike woulda been lean - not rich. I really gotta invest in some jet's for my carb.

What size jets are you running?

I really don't know. I haven't had the carb torn down since I bought the bike. I've only had the carb off enough to change the needle clip.

I'm running a stock 27mm Keihn carb and I'm pretty sure it has the stock jets.

i would check the crank seal, its easy to get to. Pull the engine, take off the sidecover, take off clutch, gears. While your at it, replace them swingarm bearings! Are you using cheap oil? That always fouls up my plugs.

runnign rich coudl also cause this. put your needle at the top clip and see what happens. then adjust the mixture screw some and run it.

jsut becasue it's a stock carb, doesn;t mean it's a stock jet, or the needle/seat coudl eb bad, or the float coudl be dirty or bad and sticking open or not stopping fuel like it should.(basic carb clean will fix that)

take the car off, and take the bowl off and clean it really well with a can of carb cleaner. whiuel you have it off, look at the jet #. should take you about 20-30min max.

good advice. Usually the obvious stuff is really the best advice.

Another thing - would an easy to way to check and see if I have a crank case leak be to drain my tranny oil and if there is the same amount I just put in last oil change it can't be much of a leak - right?

Also - with a crankcase leak - would the engine spit oil out onto the front of the engine base?
