I used an XR500 motor (pretty much the same as the XL). It wasn't worth the work and effort.

I think there is a member on here that goes by ATC500X or similar that has the electric start version in a 350X, that looks pretty neat.

Billy, do you still have that bike? Why wasn't it worth it? I've got 4 bike with the non-RFVC motor (79-83) and on RFVC bike. I'm somewhat trying to convert a spare mono-shock frame I have to a trike but I'm having probs getting a 250R swing arm from a buddy.

The power of those motors isn't all that impressive...their VERY big and heavy, theres extensive mods required to make the motor (Think, chop the thing completely in half more or less, just changing the bottom engine cradle rails doesn't cut it). The kickstarter shafts are notoriously brittle, and you have to split the cases to fix it, and then you've got twin chain driven counterbalancers and just all kinds of dumb stuff to deal with. Just not worth it.

Yeah I had an old '81 XR500, wasn't impressive at all, infact I'll call it slow, and a biatch to kick lol. If you are going to do all the modding to fit a different engine, might as well be something with power, my .02

I don't know about the 500X build iceman -and welcome to the board's..I took the advice from alot of these guy's and went with a 600 build,I am pretty happy with it too,but i'd change some thing's too.I have a thread on it ,just to see what I had to go thru on it,but it was deffinatly worth the effort,imo..
I would'nt suggest going without a RFVC motor either from my research and what these guy's say.But good luck if ya decide to go with it.

I always thought using the Honda ascot FT500 motor was the way to go. The first to years of the Ascot were single cylinder motors with electric start instead of kick start.
